Published 6/28/2023In a race against time on a treacherous lake, determined Alexander and courageous Rupert embark on a perilous journey to help a glade-spirit, ultimately testing their friendship and transforming their lives. Will their strength and resilience be enough to overcome the trials ahead and savor the bittersweet reward of a perfect moment?

Rupert was on the shore. I was in the water. We were kayaking across a lake, a relatively large one at that. We had been camping nearby since my 16th birthday only a few days ago, and this was our first journey across the lake.
I knew the tide would be turning soon, but I was having fun so I didn't think anything of it. The wind had died down, which meant there wasn't too much rocking of the boat anymore. Rupert pulled out some sandwiches, and we ate and chatted happily as we floated along.
Then, he said something about needing to go to the bathroom, so we started paddling back to shore. But it seemed like we weren't going fast enough! He kept looking back at me with an exasperated look on his face. So I paddled harder, and he paddled harder as well. I looked behind us and saw that we were moving faster now, but not enough for his liking.
"It's just over there!" he shouted over the sound of splashing water. "We'll make it!"
But then something terrible happened. He started yelling at me to stop paddling altogether! In fact, he wouldn't let me paddle anymore - he grabbed one end of the paddle and held it still while he fought against the waves with his free hand!
"Rupert..." I tried to say calmly, "let me do it."
"What's wrong?" I asked him desperately as we drifted further away from dry land.
He looked very nervous suddenly and pointed down into the water where our kayak was floating in the middle of the lake. There appeared to be something holding us up out of the water! It wasn't even touching our boat - instead its long arms seemed to be keeping us afloat! And when I looked closer...it had glowing eyes! It creeped me out - but it also seemed very friendly somehow, despite its rather imposing form in front of us!
"Rupert...who is that?" I asked him in a shaky voice.
He swallowed hard, still staring at it with wide eyes. "It's Tir," he replied softly after a moment's pause. Then he added under his breath: "The protector of life."

Rupert was on the shore again, this time helping me hobble around on crutches as we tried to find our way through a forest full of giant mushrooms that we were told were just part of Tir's domain! He said they all 'spoke' with their own voices - if you listened close enough you could hear them whispering in your ear! Some sounded like they were saying funny things while others sounded like they were talking about very serious things - but they all spoke different languages so I couldn't understand anything they were trying to say! In fact there were so many voices that it made my head hurt just listening to them! But Rupert told me not to worry about that - because some mushrooms have healing properties and that's why Tir gave them magical spirits in the first place! Rupert seemed very happy about this - especially about being given special mushrooms by these mushroom spirits themselves! If a spirit spoke directly to him then that meant it thought he was worthy or something - because spirits only speak to people they deem important or worthy in some way! Rupert believes spirits can 'see' inside us somehow - see who we are deep down inside our hearts - and decide whether what they see is good or bad or something in between! Some are good and some are bad - but most are somewhere in between, which means they're really tricky to figure out because sometimes they're helpful but other times they can cause problems for people like us humans who need help navigating this world properly and staying safe from evil things like Chaos itself!
Rupert led me deeper into the forest, careful to avoid touching any of the mushrooms. He explained that some of them could release spores that could cause hallucinations or even worse, lead to paralysis. As we walked, the whispers of the mushroom spirits grew louder, their voices overlapping in a cacophony of words and languages that made my head spin.
We came to a clearing where a cluster of mushrooms stood taller than the rest. Their vibrant colors and intricate patterns mesmerized me, and I couldn't help but reach out to touch one of the caps, despite Rupert's warning. As soon as my fingers made contact with the mushroom, a jolt of energy surged through my body, causing me to stumble backward.
Rupert gasped and hurried to my side. "Are you alright?" he asked, concern etched on his face. "You must be careful, these mushrooms have a power unlike any other."
I nodded, feeling a tingling sensation in my fingertips. "I think I understand now," I said, my voice barely audible. "The mushrooms... they carry the essence of Tir, don't they? They have the power to heal."
Rupert's eyes widened in surprise. "You felt it too?" he asked. "Yes, you're right. These mushrooms possess the healing touch of Tir. It is said that they can mend broken bones, cure illnesses, and even bring back the light to a darkened soul."
As we continued through the forest, I couldn't help but be in awe of the mystical atmosphere surrounding us. The trees seemed to whisper secrets, their leaves rustling in sync with the voices of the mushroom spirits. I found myself listening intently, hoping to catch glimpses of the wisdom they imparted.
As dusk descended, we reached a small clearing where a pool of water shimmered under the fading light. Rupert motioned for me to sit beside him near the water's edge. Reflecting on his face was a mixture of excitement and trepidation.
"Legend has it that this is a sacred site," he said in a hushed tone. "They say that Tir's power is strongest here, and those who bathe in these waters are granted a special gift."
Curiosity ignited within me, and I crouched down, cupping my hands to take a sip from the magical pool. The water was cool and refreshing, and as it trickled down my throat, I felt a surge of energy coursing through my veins, awakening something deep within me.
Suddenly, the forest grew still. The whispers ceased, and a sense of tranquility enveloped the clearing. I closed my eyes, embracing the moment, and that's when I felt it—a gentle touch against my cheek, like a feather brushing against my skin. I opened my eyes and gasped at the sight before me.
Floating above the water was a figure, ethereal and radiant. It resembled an angel, its wings shimmering with iridescent hues. It was Tir, the legendary protector of life.
"Child," Tir's voice echoed melodiously, "you have been chosen. You have shown kindness and bravery, and now I offer you a gift—the gift of empathy. With it, you will be able to understand the emotions and thoughts of others, to ease their pain and offer solace."
I gazed at Tir in awe, a mix of gratitude and incredulity coursing through me. I never imagined that a simple kayaking trip would lead to this extraordinary encounter.
Rupert beamed beside me, his eyes shining with pride. "You deserve this, my friend," he said, his voice filled with warmth. "With your new gift, we'll become even stronger together. We'll navigate the world, not just as friends, but as souls deeply connected, bound by the magic that Tir has bestowed upon us."
As Tir faded away, leaving a trail of sparkling dust in its wake, I felt a surge of determination. With empathy as my guide, I would embrace this newfound power and use it to help others in need. This journey, which began as a simple adventure on the lake, had now become something much greater—a calling to bring light and healing to a world filled with darkness. And so, hand in hand with Rupert, I embarked on a path that would forever change our lives, guided by the mystical power of Tir and the deep bond we shared.
