The soft thump of the envelope hitting the wooden table in front of me was the only sound to break the silence of this place- a silence that was brought about by the morose atmosphere and the empty chairs. The dim light cast an eerie glow around the room, but I found it comforting. The dark corners of the bar were a good place to hide in, away from any prying eyes.

I didn't drink there often, but it had become my home away from home after a hard day's work. And tonight had been one of those days. I'd been thinking about my past cases all day, trying to convince myself that they'd be better off without me, when I heard a clatter outside.

A small figure had slipped and fallen down on a patch of ice. I looked down at him for a moment- he seemed familiar somehow - then went back to my drink. But before I could finish my second glass, he was gone.

I ran out into the street, looking desperately around for any sign of him. He'd been here just a minute ago! Then I remembered something about his clothes- red and black stripes? I dashed down the street to the nearest police station and told them what happened, sending them off after him with their sirens blaring.

It took me several hours to calm myself down enough to go home and sleep, hoping he'd turn up safe in the morning. Now here I was, sitting alone in some dingy bar halfway across town because there was no other place I felt comfortable enough to drink alone.

The letter had been sitting on my desk all day, and I didn't know what to do with it. It wasn't addressed to anyone in particular- it just said "FOR THE ATTENTION OF KATHERINE CHASE." And it was postmarked three years ago. That meant it would have been sent while Anton was still alive...

I sighed and took another sip of whiskey. That had been a tough case- one of many over the years that taught me not to get too close to anyone who worked for me or shared my goals... or even liked me for that matter. It hadn't always been like that for me though; if Anton were still alive today, he'd disapprove of how much I'd changed since he passed away three years ago...

I'd met Anton as a rookie detective more than twenty years ago; he'd taken me under his wing when nobody else would have anything to do with me because he said no one else knew what it was like being an outsider trying to fit in with people who don't want you around. The first thing he'd told me was that we never got anywhere alone; we either made allies or enemies during our investigations- but never friends - and then left it up to chance whether we ended up working for them or against them later on down the road. As time went on, I learned how true this statement really was...

EIGHT YEARS AGO:

My first big investigation had been an interesting one; despite being completely unprepared for most of it, it had eventually turned out well thanks to some good luck and some smart detective work on my part... And thanks in no small part to Anton's training as well; *he* had taught me many tricks over the years that helped make up for my lack of experience early on in my career. That investigation ended with us dismantling an entire drug ring, arresting everyone involved and shutting them down permanently all thanks to one lead we found by pure chance near where their warehouse was located... They'd left an empty bottle behind where they usually delivered their merchandise every week; inside we found traces of some new mind altering drug they were trying to sell online anonymously through encrypted messages via PGP keys using Tor hidden services and anonymous bitcoin transactions - quite impressive really! Anton said this stuff wasn't even available yet legally anywhere in Europe let alone illegal - but whoever created it knew exactly what they were doing: within days after we shut down their website selling this stuff anonymously on Tor hidden services (and took control over their server), someone posted a bunch of encrypted messages saying they were going to kill themselves within 24 hours if we didn't stop harassing them by closing down their website immediately and apologizing publicly for our harassment tactics used against them! They also promised that if we let them live after this incident (which apparently happened in France), they wouldn't try something like this again! We were confused at first how someone managed to figure out so quickly where their server was hosted (the website itself had no links whatsoever leading back to their server) - until we realized something important: whoever wrote this message must have also used that very same drug at least once before because there were certain spelling mistakes in the message (such as missing an extra "r" at the end of "harass") that couldn't be made without first having consumed this substance! It took us less than ten minutes after receiving
