The Mechanic's Renaissance: A Quest for Connection
·
Published 3/3/2023A shy, gifted mechanic from Brazil, Felix, painfully navigates the unfamiliar and tumultuous world of biker media, as he endeavors to connect with the aloof Sabrina, a work-from-home audio transcriber, whom Felix is inexplicably infatuated with.
So this guy walks into a bar.
It's a typical bar, dimly lit with a few lonely patrons at the counter and tables. A couple of pool tables in the middle with some guys leaning over them, beer in their hands, cigarette dangling from their lips. The TV at one end is showing some game.
This guy has a look of confusion in his face as he scans around, trying to look inconspicuous. He takes a seat at one end of the counter and signals to the bartender that he'd like to order a drink.
The bartender ambles over and asks "What'll it be?" The guy orders a beer and looks around again, taking in every detail of the place - from the dark wooden panels framing the walls, to the bottles lining up behind the bar.
"You seem confused." Said the bartender as he slides him his drink. The guy looks up and nods. "Yeah, I guess I am." He says. "I don't know if you've noticed but there's been quite a lot of changes since I've last been here." He gestures with his hands around him as if trying to indicate everything that has changed. The bartender shrugs nonchalantly and goes back to wiping glasses behind the bar.
The guy takes a sip of his beer and continues looking around, trying to make sense of what he was seeing. There were framed pictures on the walls - mostly motorcycles in various stages of assembly and disassembly, some bikes that looked pretty much done with just minor things remaining like the detailing work or polishing to do. The floor was covered with sawdust, bits of metal and wood were all over; there was even a machine lathe standing near an open door that led into another room.
Suddenly there's a loud bang! as one of the pool players slams his cue down on the table after missing a shot by mere inches. He curses loudly and grabs another cue from the rack on top of one of the tables, muttering something about "fucking beginners".
Another man sitting nearby turns towards him with an annoyed expression on his face and says "Hey man, can you keep it down? Some people are trying to watch this game." He gestures towards the TV at one end where two men wearing helmets were smashing into each other during some kind of American Football game.
The first man glares at him for a while before saying "well why don't you go find somewhere else then? This is my fucking house so I'll yell all I want."
The second man gets up angrily and crosses over to where he's seated, looking like he's ready for a fight if need be. His own friends get up too but quickly walk over to him when they notice that both him and his opponent have something metallic protruding out from their waistbands - probably guns judging by how threatening they looked. The second man walks up to within a couple feet from where he was seated and leans in menacingly close until they're almost nose-to-nose before saying softly "Well I'm trying to watch this game so please shut your fucking mouth."
Meanwhile back at our guy who had walked into this strange place...he takes another sip of his beer as he watches this exchange unfold between these two men who seemed hellbent on beating each other up right there in front of everyone else at the bar. His eyes widen slightly when one of them unclips something metallic from his waistband - reaching out slowly towards his friend while staring intently at what seemed like an angry mob surrounding him - before realizing it was just an umbrella that slipped out accidentally like something out of an old black-and-white movie would show someone doing during those boring scenes where nothing happens except for maybe someone talking slowly while walking across the street or parking their car outside some fancy apartment building etc etc etc...if you know what i mean...
