The sun was setting on the Silver Forest, and Malcolm’s feet were killing him.
“My feet are burning,” Malcolm whispered to Jamal. “I can’t take this anymore. I want to go home.”
Jamal ignored Malcolm and continued walking through the Silver Forest. Jamal had walked through the Silver Forest a thousand times before. He knew exactly where they were going: the Silver Temple that lay at the heart of the forest, surrounded by a lake of silver water that shone like the moon.
Malcolm had never seen the Silver Temple before, and he was enjoying it. The trees were all made of silver, their branches so thin and spindly that they looked like veins or nerves on a human hand. Their leaves were shaped like razor blades, and if you touched them, you would bleed everywhere. They rustled in a very strange way; it sounded as though someone was running their fingertips over piano keys at one moment, then as though someone was drawing chalk lines on a blackboard at another. The water glowed just like the moon did, only brighter, more silvery white than anything else ever could be. Malcolm wasn’t afraid of anything that lived in the forest; he trusted Jamal with his life. They were friends since they were babies, though they never saw each other face-to-face until they started university together three years ago. And now they might die together!
“We have to keep moving!” Jamal said sharply. “Our lives are in danger! We have to get to the temple before Kufu gets there!”
Malcolm knew Jamal was right: Kufu was coming for them, and he wouldn’t stop until he killed them both. Kufu was once a student of theirs at their university in Green City; he was an arrogant asshole who thought he was better than everyone else because he was rich and handsome (he wasn’t). He hated Malcolm and Jamal because they didn’t think less of him for being a third-class citizen; instead, they treated him like any other person and wanted to be his friend. But Kufu didn’t have any real friends – he only had money and power, which wasn’t enough for him anymore. He wanted more power than anyone else in the world possessed; he wanted more money than any other man could ever get his hands on: he wanted world domination! And he would do anything to get it, including killing Malcolm and Jamal!
It all happened yesterday evening at dinner with their friends when Kufu snuck up behind them and held a gun to Malcolm’s head while Jamal ran away with all his might. He whispered into Malcolm’s ear with a hint of insanity in his voice: “You cost me my scholarship – one million dollars every year for four years – because you insisted I be your friend even though I am poor! I will kill you both equally now!” Then he pulled the trigger on the gun without hesitation; it made a sound like lightning splitting apart two clouds during a downpour! *BANG*! And Malcolm jolted back from his chair onto the floor but got up immediately because he didn’t feel any pain or injury whatsoever! He looked around for Kufu in shock but couldn’t find him anywhere; then something strange happened: three people burst out of thin air in front of him holding guns just like Kufu had! They wore large cloaks that covered everything except their eyes so none of them could tell who they were until they spoke: “We are here to help you, young man! We are your superpowers! You will be safe now that we are here with you! What is your name? Where do you live? What is your favorite food? Who is your best friend? What does your best friend look like? Tell us everything about yourself so we know how to help you survive potential attacks from Kufu today and every day after that until we deem it necessary to leave Earth again for good! Now go find your friend before it is too late!! Do not let him die today!! It is our job to warn you when things like this happen so you can save yourselves!! Go!! GO!! GO!! GO!!!”
Malcolm ran through the forest towards the Silver Temple as fast as his legs could carry him; then he heard crying behind him: “Why are we doing this?! Why are we helping an ugly little runt like this?! We don't deserve this treatment!! We deserve better than this!! We deserve better than this ugly little runt!!! Where is Kufu??? Isn't it time yet??? When did we agree to help someone so pathetic?! This is unfair!!! Our lives shouldn't go this way!!! The world shouldn't treat us this way!!! Not when we're better than everyone else!!! It's not fair!!! It's not fair!!! It's not fair!!!!!!!!! *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOB* *SOB SOB SOb* *SOb sOb sOb* *SOb sO bb bb bb bb bb bb bbbbbbbbbbbbbbb bbbbbbbbbbaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!**"
And then… nothing at all happened next…
The Silver Temple loomed ahead, its grandeur shining through the thick foliage of the Silver Forest. Malcolm could hear the rush of water from the lake as he got closer, drawing him forward with a mix of fear and anticipation. He glanced back briefly, his heart pounding in his chest, but there was no sign of Kufu following them.
Jamal, ahead of him, reached the entrance of the temple. Its silver doors were adorned with intricate carvings depicting the history of the forest and its ancient guardians. He turned back to Malcolm, his eyes filled with determination. "We made it, Malcolm. We're safe now."
Relief washed over Malcolm as he stumbled towards Jamal, who wrapped an arm around his shoulder for support. Together, they stepped into the Silver Temple, the doors closing behind them with a resounding thud.
The interior of the temple was a breathtaking sight, bathed in a silvery glow that emanated from the walls. The air was cool and calming, soothing Malcolm's weary bones. They stood in a vast chamber, adorned with statues of the Silver Guardians, protectors of the forest. Their elegant poses and sharp, silver eyes seemed to watch over them both.
Malcolm couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of the temple. "Jamal, this place... it's incredible," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I never imagined anything like this."
Jamal looked at him with a soft smile. "I knew you would be amazed, Malcolm. The Silver Temple holds many secrets, but most importantly, it provides safety."
As they ventured further into the temple, the sound of their footsteps echoed throughout the chamber. The statues seemed to come alive, their gazes following their every move. There was a sense of reverence in the air, as if the temple itself acknowledged their presence.
They reached a small alcove where a shimmering pool of silver water lay. The liquid moved gently, casting ethereal reflections on the walls. Jamal knelt by the edge, cupping the water in his hands. "This water possesses healing properties," he said, his voice laced with awe. "It will take away any pain or harm inflicted upon you."
Malcolm joined him, dipping his fingers into the soothing liquid. He marveled at the way it caressed his skin, leaving a trail of warmth in its wake. Closing his eyes, he let the water wash over him, scrubbing away the fatigue and fear that had accompanied their treacherous journey.
When Malcolm opened his eyes, Jamal was crouched down by a nearby wall, studying a series of ancient inscriptions. He beckoned Malcolm to come closer, excitement gleaming in his eyes. "Look at this, Malcolm. It seems there is more to this temple than meets the eye."
Curiosity piqued, Malcolm hurried over. The inscriptions were in a language he didn't recognize, but there was an undeniable aura of power surrounding them. He could almost feel the stories and ancient knowledge etched into the silver walls.
Just as Malcolm was about to ask Jamal what he had discovered, a voice echoed through the chamber, resonating with authority and wisdom. "Welcome, weary travelers. You have arrived at the Silver Temple seeking refuge."
Startled, Malcolm and Jamal turned towards the source of the voice. From the shadows emerged a tall figure, draped in a cloak made of silver feathers. The figure's eyes shimmered with wisdom, piercing the darkness with an otherworldly glow.
Malcolm felt a surge of both fear and fascination. "Who are you?" he managed to stammer.
The figure smiled kindly. "I am Alara, the Guardian of the Silver Temple. It is my duty to protect this sacred place and those who seek sanctuary within." Alara's voice was soothing and carried a melodious quality that filled the chamber.
Jamal stepped forward, his voice filled with respect. "We are Malcolm and Jamal, and we seek refuge from Kufu. He seeks to harm us."
Alara's expression darkened, and a fire ignited within their eyes. "Kufu... a name that has brought pain to many. He is a twisted soul, fueled by greed and power. But fear not, for within the Silver Temple, you will find not only sanctuary but the means to confront and defeat him."
Malcolm's heart raced at the prospect of finally facing their tormentor head-on. "How can we stop Kufu? He seemed invincible when he shot me."
Alara's smile returned, but this time it held a glimmer of determination. "Kufu may have his wealth and power, but he lacks one thing that you possess - the strength of true friendship and the purity of heart. Within this temple lies the power of unity, the strength to overcome any adversary."
Malcolm exchanged a knowing glance with Jamal. Their bond had been tested many times, and it had proved unbreakable. They believed in each other and knew that together they could face any challenge.
"We will do whatever it takes to stop Kufu," Malcolm declared, determination steely in his voice.
Alara nodded approvingly. "Very well. Follow me, and I will guide you through the trials that await you within the Silver Temple. Only by passing these tests will you unlock the true potential of unity and stand a chance against Kufu's dark forces."
Malcolm and Jamal shared one final look before following Alara into the depths of the temple. They were ready to face the trials, to heal their wounds, and emerge stronger than ever before. The fate of the Silver Forest and their own lives depended on it.
