"What's that?" I pointed to a new poster on the wall of my classroom.
"Oh, that? It's an announcement for the school play." The teacher said with a bored tone, "They're doing 'The Mikado', you should try out for it."
I stared at the poster, reading the details over and over again. The play was to be performed in front of the whole school next week, and it would also be broadcasted live on television. I knew so because my friend Tembo had mentioned it once or twice, but I hadn't given it much thought.
"I-I-I'll try out!" I forced my response out through chattering teeth, not even daring to look up at the teacher.
"That's nice! If you don't make it, there will always be other plays." The teacher casually said before turning back to his newspaper.
I stood there frozen in place, still looking down at the floor as if someone had placed me there as a statue.
"Um... Excuse me..." I managed to say after a long moment.
The teacher grunted an acknowledgement without lifting his head from his paper.
"Th-there are other roles besides Katisha..." My voice broke halfway through my sentence, but I pushed through it.
The teacher slammed down his paper and shot me a dirty glance before returning to his paper again.
"Is there anyway she can avoid being cast as Katisha?" I ventured further with trembling knees, "Cuz... Cuz she really doesn't like singing."
I took a deep breath. "She can barely remember her own name, let alone words when she's nervous!" My voice was finally getting louder now that I was getting more angry than afraid. "Anything except Katisha!" I shouted at him with all my might, trembling with rage as tears threatened to spill over.
