The sun reflected off the ocean, blinding me and making me squint. I shielded my eyes with my hand and continued to look out at the vast expanse of blue. The wind was calm today on this small beach, but it always managed to create a little bit of white foam.

I was starting to get hungry and decided it was time to make a move back towards the cottage. I stood up, brushed off my shorts, and began walking back along the path that led through the trees. As I reached the clearing where our little cottage sat, I noticed there were voices coming from inside.

"Hello?" I called out. "Is anyone here?"

My three friends all came out onto the front porch, smiling as they saw me. They looked a little worried though.

"Hey," said Andrew, "We were wondering when you'd be home."

"What's going on?" I asked, noticing how quiet it was outside. Usually there were sounds - chirps of birds or rustling in the leaves - but now there was nothing except for silence. It made me uneasy.

"We think we messed something up," said Zoe, looking down at her feet. She glanced at Andrew and then over at Clinton before looking back at me again. "We think we might have ruined our world."

I looked around again, noticing that everything seemed so stale and lifeless now that they had mentioned it. "You mean like...a nuclear war?"

Zoe shook her head slowly and pointed towards the end of the driveway where there was a car parked by the road. "Let's go." she said quietly to everyone else as she walked past me and towards the car.

We got into the car and Zoe drove us down the road a ways before pulling over by an exit ramp near a gas station. She put on her blinker, pulled out onto the ramp, and merged onto a highway that looked like any other highway you'd see anywhere in America. There were cars going both directions in front of us and several trucks driving by as well with their drivers talking on cell phones or holding cans of soda in their hands with straws sticking out of them while they drove with one hand on the wheel. It all seemed normal enough…but somehow creepy too because we knew things weren't really normal anymore here in this world.

We turned off an exit after another few miles or so and quickly found ourselves back on what we recognized to be a little road near our beach house where we had been enjoying this vacation together for the past week. Zoe pulled into an empty parking space in front of a building made of wood that had a sign out front announcing itself as "The Green Bay Pub".

We all got out of the car and went inside where we found four people sitting around a table drinking beer and sharing some chips with salsa dip in between them next to an empty pitcher of margaritas which had been left behind along with four empty glasses after an unknown, but seemingly disastrous event had occurred earlier in the day.

As we sat down at our own table, it became clear that there was an overwhelming sense of despair in the room; like the very essence of joy had been sucked out of our lives. We couldn't quite put our fingers on what had happened to cause such a melancholic shift, but we were certain that whatever it was, it had changed our reality for the worse. Suddenly every happy memory we had ever shared together seemed to slip away, replaced by a hollow void where love once thrived.

Even as we attempted to cling to the remaining threads of happiness, the unsettling realization set in that perhaps we had done something irreparable to our world, leaving it devoid of the beauty we once held so dear. We could only hope that somewhere, in some alternate reality or dimension, the moments we cherished still existed – and with them, a version of ourselves that still laughed, played, and truly lived. But for now, all we were left with was an unmistakable feeling that our cherished memories had become mere echoes, haunting us like distant apparitions in this strange, empty world we had somehow come to inhabit.
