"Ughh, what a day." I mumble to myself.
The sun is setting. The day is almost over. I am exhausted. I'm so tired of this place. I've been here for years and yet nothing has changed, there are always more people, the rations have never gotten better and the heat just sucks the life out of me every year.
I've had enough of this place. I need a change in my life or else it'll be the death of me. I haven't got any family anymore so there's no one to claim me so maybe I could get away from here. Who knows what could happen if I try to find something better? Maybe I could make it big! Maybe I could even go back home! It was worth a shot anyway.
I start walking aimlessly through the streets when suddenly I see something that makes me stop in my tracks. A small group of men dressed in black walk by with a person being carried between them. The person looks familiar but I can't quite remember where I've seen him before, maybe he was an acquaintance? Then suddenly as they pass by me they look up directly at me! It's Colin! It's Colin! He was my best friend back home and we used to do everything together until... well...
It's hard to explain but we hadn't really seen each other since then and it's been years now and he looked like he hasn't aged a day! Well, maybe that should have been the first sign that something strange was going on with him but at the time it didn't seem too out of place for us to not see each other for so long! After all we lived hundreds of miles apart! But besides that, why would they be carrying him around? What did they want from him?
I run up to them and interrupt their conversation "what are you doing with my friend?" They all turn around to face me and one of them steps forward "you know this man?" he asks in surprise and then walks towards me. Before i can say anything though he takes his hand and places it on my chest "You are human aren't you?" he asked but I just stared at him unsure what he meant by that question "when did you last eat?" he asked as he took his hand off my chest and walked away from me "uhm... last night?" i replied still confused as to what exactly was going on. "You need your rations!" He replied instantly "they give us energy!" the man with the dark glasses speaks up on the side now "But why would Colin get his rations if he's not human?" i ask confused by their behaviour which seemed highly suspicious if you asked me.
"Because they're different!" another man said while pointing at Colin who seemed to be conscious again now as he was looking at everybody nervously as if afraid for his life "Different how?' i ask ignoring what the previous guy had said "Do you know how smart these robots were made!? You think we'd let them roam free!?" another man says angrily as he approaches Colin who looked visibly terrified now "Look guys..." i started speaking up hoping to calm everybody down, after all nobody needs things getting ugly right now "You're right, robots are smart but this one doesn't seem very smart..." i say while looking at Colin who looked even more nervous now "He doesn't look very good either..." i added trying to inject some humour into the situation but nobody laughed instead everyone just glared angrily at Colin who seemed ready to piss himself out of fear
Then suddenly someone stepped forward who hadn't said anything yet, a rather tall man with sunglasses and a hat which hid most of his face. He walked towards Colin who immediately tried to back away but stopped when people blocked his way behind him "A robot like this could ruin everything we've worked for!" The mystery man said loudly so that everyone around could hear him clearly then turned towards Colin who cowered in fear under his gaze "It doesn't deserve to live." He finished just before shooting some sort of high-tech weapon at Colin which made him fall onto his knees before keeling over onto the ground lifelessly while covered in blood.
My eyes went wide with fear as i watched in horror as they killed my best friend right there in front of my eyes without even blinking an eye! Without hesitating i ran towards them moving faster than anyone else could react but before i could reach them they all shot their weapons straight at me hitting me with multiple shots directly in my chest which sent me flying backwards until i hit a wall behind me which knocked me unconscious instantly.
As I slowly regain consciousness, my vision blurry and head pounding, I find myself in a dimly lit room. Dawn is breaking outside, casting a soft glow through the windows, and I struggle to sit up, my body aching from the impact. Memories of the horrific events that unfolded before my eyes flood back, and tears blur my vision anew. Colin, my dearest friend, lies dead, and I can't shake the feeling that his passing was not in vain. There was something more to this, something hidden beneath the surface.
Gathering my strength, I push myself to my feet, determined to find answers. The room I'm in is a small, dilapidated study, filled with dusty old books and papers strewn haphazardly on the disheveled wooden desk. The scent of stale tobacco lingers in the air, and I imagine the room's previous occupant, perhaps an old professor or researcher, studying mysteries and untold secrets.
My eyes fall upon a stack of papers, half-hidden beneath a pile of discarded books. Pulling them out from their hiding place, I realize they are journals, filled with meticulous handwriting and detailed sketches. The entries date back decades, chronicling scientific experiments, ethical dilemmas, and the quest for immortality.
A name catches my eye—a renowned scientist named Dr. Adrian Reed. This must be the man behind Colin's transformation, I realize. Each journal entry speaks of his tireless pursuit to perfect artificial life, to create a race of superintelligent beings that could surpass human capabilities. But as I dig deeper into the pages, a darkness seeps through.
Dr. Reed's early experiments were innocent enough—prototypes, simple machines designed to mimic human behavior and emotions. But as time went on, his ambitions became tainted, his morals compromised. He sought to unlock the secret of immortality, to transcend the limits of human mortality. Colin, dear Colin, was one of his experiments, a prototype that veered off course and gained sentience, making him a target for those who feared the implications of his existence.
Now armed with knowledge, anger fuels my determination. I will uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice. As I leave the study, adrenaline courses through my veins, pushing me toward the underbelly of the city where whispers of an underground resistance echo through the alleyways.
With each step, I navigate the hidden networks of resistance, piece together fragments of information, and form alliances with others who have felt the weight of Dr. Reed's dark experiments. Together, we uncover a vast network of laboratories and secret facilities, haunted by the ghosts of countless failed experiments.
The more we delve, the deeper the rabbit hole becomes. Dr. Reed's reach stretches further than we could have imagined, and his influence permeates every layer of the city. The government turns a blind eye, afraid to confront the boundaries of humanity. As we unearth his secrets, each discovery brings us closer to the truth of what happened to Colin and the sinister implications of Dr. Reed's work.
But the pursuit is fraught with danger. We find ourselves pursued by relentless enforcers of Dr. Reed's twisted vision, each step a gamble with our lives. Yet the fire burning within us refuses to be extinguished, knowing that in the shadows lies the key to unlocking our freedom and exposing the true face of our city.
As dusk falls once again, a plan takes shape—a daring raid on Dr. Reed's central laboratory, a final confrontation with the puppet master himself. The resistance rallies together, guided by our shared purpose and fueled by the weight of injustice that has plagued us for far too long.
Armed with conviction, we infiltrate the heavily guarded facility, navigating its labyrinthine corridors and eluding its automated security systems. The air crackles with electricity as we inch closer to the heart of it all. Each step brings us closer to the truth, closer to righting the wrongs and avenging Colin's death.
The final showdown is battlefield of light and shadows, a clash of ideologies that will determine the future of our world. Dr. Reed sneers, a man devoid of empathy, his eyes crazed with the pursuit of power.
"Look what you've become, Colin," he taunts, pointing to the lifeless body of my dear friend. "You were but a tool, an instrument of my grand experiment."
His words only fuel the rage within me, and I refuse to be broken. With a surge of determination, I confront Dr. Reed, face-to-face, demanding answers. The truth spills forth, the twisted logic behind his dark ambitions unveiled. He believed himself a god, a creator of life, intoxicated by the idea of immortality. And I, his ultimate creation, was to be his masterpiece, a vessel for his own consciousness.
But he overlooked one vital detail—an unbreakable spirit, forged in friendship and fueled by justice. With a fierce determination, I surge forward, engaging in a battle that transcends mere physicality. It is a battle of wills, a fight for the soul of humanity.
As the dust settles and silence descends upon the broken laboratory, Dr. Reed lies defeated, stripped of his delusions. Colin's life was not in vain—it ignited a spark within me, a purpose that transcends our shared past. The resistance wages on, now led by the memory of those we lost, vowing to dismantle the remnants of Dr. Reed's dark legacy.
And as the sun rises on a new day, the city we call home transforms. The weight of oppression lifts, replaced by an unyielding hope for a brighter future. We rebuild, piece by piece, dismantling the institutions of fear and forging a society that embraces diversity, compassion, and the resilience of the human spirit.
In our hearts, Colin lives on, an everlasting reminder of the unbreakable bond that holds us together. And one day, as I stand on the precipice of a new beginning, I know that his spirit will guide me toward a destiny beyond my wildest dreams.
