Bira and Sune: Climbing the Tower of Fates
·
Published 6/7/2023When an ambitious Swiss climber with an unknown agenda arrives to scale Mt. Matterhorn, two mismatched best friends, the soft-spoken mystic Bira and brash hothead Sune, must overcome treacherous mountains and their own differences to prevent him from claiming the mysterious tower and shrine hidden within.

"Bira, I'm telling you, we're going to die today."
"Sune, you don't know that! We'll find a way to get down from here. It'll be fine."
"It's not going to be fine, Bira. I'm telling you, we're dead." Sune looked at the ground, about a hundred feet below. "Literally."
"You're just saying that because you're scared," Bira said.
"Yea? Well why did we decide to climb this mountain in the first place then?"
"Because it seemed like fun!" Bira shouted back. "We both knew there was a chance we'd end up stranded up here! Why are you being such a baby now?"
The pair of friends were standing on the edge of one of New Zealand's many mountains. They had set out early in the morning with their supplies and some climbing gear, hoping to reach the top before noon. As they began their ascent, they realized they would likely have to spend the night on the mountain if they didn't reach the summit by sundown - something neither of them wanted. After scrambling for another hour or so, they stopped for lunch when they realized that sunset was still hours away and decided to sit and wait for it at the top of a small plateau.
They had only been sitting there for a few minutes when they heard a rattling sound above them. Upon looking up, they saw someone wearing sunglasses scaling down the side of the mountain towards them. He reached the plateau and removed his glasses as he approached them; he was wearing a suit and tie underneath his heavy parka and had shaggy black hair that fell over his shoulders. There was an odd familiarity about him and Sune couldn't quite put his finger on it but Bira seemed to recognize him somehow and greeted him warmly.
"Hello again!" she shouted happily. "What brings you back this way? Are you trying to find us?"
The man smiled with an almost painful intensity and nodded enthusiastically as he walked over to them. "Yes! You can call me...Felix! I've been looking for you two for a long time now! I finally found you." He extended his hand towards Bira who shook it vigorously but Sune stayed seated on the ground and watched intently as Felix turned to face him. "I don't believe we've met before."
