Unexpected Journeys in Bauerbach
·
Published 3/28/2023Unexpectedly thrown together, an old man and a young boy embark on an offbeat adventure in a mining town to uncover a deeply hidden secret that could save them from mortality and bind their friendship forever.
The old man sat in the rocking chair next to the fireplace. The room was dimly lit by the glowing embers that still flickered within the hearth. He could hear a gentle rain tapping on the roof, but he knew that wouldn’t last long. Winter was on its way and he had to get back to work if they were going to have enough coal to last them through April. But he just couldn’t get himself to move. As he sat there he could feel his bones creaking, and it seemed like his joints were always sore nowadays. He was starting to feel tired more often lately, too. He looked over at the bed where Carl was sleeping and wondered what time it was. After all, it didn’t really matter since no one would be making a delivery today.
The old man continued staring into the fire as shadows danced across the walls behind him. He had lived in this small mining community for most of his life, and this house had been in his family for four generations. Even though it didn’t have all the modern conveniences like running water or electricity, he loved it. The wooden floors creaked when he walked, and the windows rattled whenever a strong wind blew past them. But that wasn’t nearly as bad as living in an apartment downtown with some loud neighbors below him who liked to play their music late into the night while they partied on their balcony during warm summer evenings. No matter what you did, you could never get rid of that annoying sound, no matter how much you tried to fix things up around your place. And so when Carl had moved in with him two years ago, Thomas knew right away that this old farmhouse would be perfect for the two of them.
Carl had been living alone in an abandoned shack down by the river when Thomas first met him. The young boy had been slowly starving himself while waiting for someone who would never come back for him from a place where people never visited anymore; and when Thomas found him lying unconscious on the floor of his shack, all alone with nothing but a rusted knife beside him, he knew that he couldn't leave him there to die. So now here they were: Thomas, age seventy-four; and Carl, age twelve; living together in this old house out in the woods where no one else dared venture except for them and their families' occasional visitors who came by once a month during deliveries to pick up supplies from town - usually a few boxes of rice or cereal and some cans of vegetables from someplace far away where food apparently grew on trees instead of being grown on farms and harvested from the ground like it should be - either that or whatever extra coal they had leftover after filling their monthly orders - because even though it was cold outside year round here in Wisconsin, it still got colder even further north towards Canada than here in Bauerbach where it remained relatively warm throughout most of winter until late March when winter's final death throes finally brought everything back down to freezing again.
Thomas continued watching the glowing embers within his hearth as visions rose up before his mind's eye: images of things that used to live nearby long before ever a city existed anywhere near here; images of creatures that might still exist somewhere deep within these woods, lurking just beyond sight behind every tree: giant things with sharp teeth and claws ready to devour anyone foolish enough not to run away quickly enough...
