Telekinetic Salvage

“Goddamn it, Jim! I told you not to touch that!” Captain Reynolds yelled as the entire ship began shaking violently.

“I didn’t touch anything, Cap! It just started on its own!” Jim replied, gripping the console to steady himself.

“Well, un-start it!”

Jim frantically tapped at the controls in front of him. “I don’t know how! The damn thing’s not responding!”

Captain Reynolds ran his hands through his hair in frustration. This was just their luck. They were a small salvage crew, scraping by from job to job, and now they were stuck in the middle of nowhere with a cargo ship that had suddenly come back to life.

The alarms blared throughout the ship as lights flickered overhead. The crew scrambled to secure themselves and prepare for whatever was coming next.

“Cap!” Sarah shouted over the chaos. “We’ve got incoming!”

Reynolds turned to look at the monitor and felt his stomach drop. A swarm of drones shot past them towards the cargo ship. He watched helplessly as they tore through what was left of its hull and disappeared inside.

“What the hell are they doing?” he muttered.

Suddenly, a bright light filled the room as an explosion rocked their own ship.

“Shit! Shields up!” Reynolds yelled into his comm as he stumbled back against a wall.

The crew worked together to stabilize their ship while keeping an eye on the cargo vessel. The drones had stopped attacking but were still swarming around it like angry bees protecting their hive.

“What do you think is going on over there?” Sarah asked, her eyes glued to the monitor.

“I don’t know,” Reynolds replied grimly. “But I have a bad feeling about this.”

They watched in silence for several minutes until finally, one by one, the drones began dropping out of sight.

“Are they… shutting down?” Jim asked incredulously.

Reynolds frowned. “I don’t like this. Keep an eye on them.”

As they watched, the last of the drones disappeared into the cargo ship. The monitor in front of them suddenly flickered to life, showing a view from inside one of the cargo holds.

“What’s happening?” Sarah asked nervously.

They all froze as they watched a figure step into view. It was tall and heavily armored, with glowing red eyes that scanned the room before settling on the camera.

“Oh shit,” Jim whispered.

The figure raised its arm and pointed directly at them. Then, with blinding speed, it lunged at the camera and everything went black.

“Cap? Cap, are you there?” Sarah’s voice echoed through the darkness.

“I’m here,” Reynolds replied grimly. “But I think we’ve got bigger problems.”

The lights suddenly came back on, revealing a room full of heavily armed soldiers standing in front of them.

“Well, fuck,” Jim muttered.

The soldiers stared at them for a moment before one of them spoke in a deep, gravelly voice.

“You will surrender your ship immediately or face termination.”

Reynolds glanced at his crew and then back at the soldiers. He knew they were outmatched but he wasn’t about to go down without a fight.

“Sorry boys, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen,” he said with a smirk.

Before anyone could react, the soldiers opened fire. The crew dove for cover as bullets tore through the room around them. They returned fire as best they could but their salvager weapons were no match for what these soldiers were carrying.

One by one, their attackers closed in until finally there was nowhere left to run. Reynolds braced himself for what he knew was coming next when suddenly there was a loud crash from behind him followed by several surprised shouts.

He turned to see two figures standing over the fallen soldiers – an older man with a grizzled face and a young woman with short-cropped black hair. They were both wearing salvager uniforms.

“Who the hell are you?” Reynolds demanded, keeping his gun trained on them.

The older man held up his hands in a gesture of peace. “Easy there, Captain. We’re here to help.”

Reynolds frowned. “How do you know my name?”

The woman rolled her eyes. “We’ve been watching you, dumbass. Now put your gun down before I take it away from you.”

Reynolds hesitated for a moment before reluctantly lowering his weapon.

“Now then,” the man said with a smile. “Shall we get out of here before more of these guys show up?”

Reynolds looked at his crew and then back at the two strangers. He didn’t know who they were or why they were helping him but he wasn’t about to turn down an offer like that.

“Lead the way,” he said with a nod.

The man grinned and turned to head back towards their ship. Reynolds followed close behind, still not sure if he could trust these people but knowing that he didn’t have much of a choice.
