Ozy's Freedom Quest
·
Published 6/9/2023In a mythological world oppressive with systemic injustice, an anthropomorphic cat hero named Ozy must lead a pack of dissenters on a daring mission across unfathomable galaxies to fight the tyrannical space government and finally find a way to free their oppressed population and restore freedom and individuality.

The airlock shut behind us with a loud, metallic clang. I knew we didn’t have much time.
I looked over at the others. They were ready. We had trained together, and they knew what to do. They’d done this before. I was the first new recruit, and it terrified me. But I had to be strong for them.
I took a deep breath and started checking my gear. The harness was secure, the gun was charged, the box was on my back, and the mask hung from my neck. It would only take one good shot to take it down.
My paws shook as I finished with my gear and stood up. The others sat quietly in the dimly lit room. They waited for me to give them the signal.
For months now, we’d been planning our escape. But every time we thought we had a plan worked out, something went wrong and they got wind of it somehow and stopped us before we could even leave the ship. Every time we thought we’d figured out their security system, some new obstacle arose to get in our way.
This time though, this time we knew they wouldn’t expect this kind of attack so soon after they had captured us again; they didn’t think we would try anything so soon after they had recaptured us a few weeks ago and forced us into cryo-sleep; they didn’t think that just because of how things had been going for them lately that we would still want our freedom more than anything else in the world and more than our own lives; no matter what happened from here on out, nothing was going to stop us from getting off this ship alive - dead or alive! - today!
Silently, I reached my paw up to my shoulders and felt for the button on my collar. Then I pressed it hard with all four fingers of both paws and watched as it hissed open and fell away from my neck onto the ground between my feet.
The others stood up slowly, weapons at the ready as they too reached up to their collars and undid them as well. They knew very well that if their collar went off while we were trying to sabotage this mission then it would alert security faster than any alarm system ever could have done before: they would know exactly where we were within seconds and be on top of us before any of us even had a chance to move an inch, let alone make it to one of those escape pods that were supposed to be full of food, water and oxygen for when we finally made it back to Earth safely - but which were always empty when someone tried to use them...
As soon as everyone else had successfully removed their collars without setting them off (or sounding an alarm), I nodded at them just once before running straight in front of the door into the hallway beyond where I knew there was another security camera watching all movement along this particular hallway - but because they'd never expected anyone like us to even get close enough to reach its lens or even see what lay beyond its view, let alone break through its protective shield (not that it would have mattered anyway) - but I took aim anyway just in case! Just in case this last gamble wasn't going to pay off after all... And just as I did so a light flashed red on one side of the screen near where I knew that camera was watching everything going on behind me: red for danger... DANGER!!!
Countless times those lights had flashed red when our plans were foiled, our conversations were overheard, despite the precautions we took. It seemed like even the smallest infractions set off those red lights. Over time, it became clear that those in power used these arbitrary laws to maintain control. To keep us submissive, to keep us chained metaphorically, unable to enact any change.
But not anymore. Today we would break free from these invisible shackles, liberate ourselves from this constant state of captivity. No longer would we live in fear, retreating at the sight of those red lights. No matter what challenges we faced, no matter how many obstacles stood in our way, nothing could stop us from fighting for our freedom.
With every ounce of determination we had, we pushed forward, knowing that our future rested on our actions. In unity, we embraced the possibility of both life and death, knowing full well that any outcome was preferable to the enslavement we had always known.
Steeling ourselves with a resolute sense of purpose, we prepared to face our final challenge: the culmination of countless struggles and hardships. This moment marked our entry into the ultimate battle for our freedom. And as we moved forward, fueled by our passion for liberty, we finally knew that nothing—absolutely nothing—could stand in our way.
