A Lost Orbit of Time

I sat at the table, my hands fidgeting nervously as I waited for her to come back. She said she'd only be gone a minute. I looked around the room and sighed.

"How much longer do you think she'll be?" My best friend asked me, looking equally bored.

"I dunno, I'm sure it'll be soon."

The teacher walked in. He smiled and greeted us kindly. "Hi everyone," he said, his voice quiet enough to not disturb anyone else in the classroom. "how are you today?"

"Fine!" We all replied in unison, smiling brightly at him. He smiled back and took his seat at his desk. Soon after this all the students arrived, and then we began learning about the different types of stars in the sky. It was kind of boring actually, but it wasn't too bad. After class ended I waited for her again, standing up from my chair as she approached me with a wide grin on her face.

"So how did it go?" I asked excitedly, bouncing on my toes slightly. She was so smart and beautiful; she had long black hair that went down to her waist and big brown eyes that were just like chocolate pools.

"It went great! Now let's get home before Mom starts worrying about us." We left the school building together and began walking through town towards our house a few blocks away from the school. It was a nice day outside; not too hot or cold and there wasn't any rain or thunderstorms or anything like that. It was just a nice little afternoon walk home from school, like we did every day after class ended. That's when she put her hand on my shoulder suddenly and without warning we disappeared into thin air and reappeared just as quickly on top of a stone wall surrounding some old building that hasn't been used in years.

She turned to me with a smile on her face and grabbed my hands in hers. "How would you like to see something super cool?" She asked me eagerly with a gleam in her eye. "What is it? What is it?!" I bounced up and down excitedly next to her on the wall, squealing loudly as I watched her reach into one of her many pockets in her dress and pull out an ancient looking clock made of bronze with strange patterns carved into it's surface. She showed it to me carefully, making sure not to drop or break it while I observed it curiously. "What is it?" I asked again innocently as she placed it down onto the top of the wall between us both so we could both see it better while we stood on opposite sides of it facing each other with our legs hanging over the edge of the wall; bending our knees so we didn't fall off while we examined this ancient treasure carefully for ourselves. She explained to me that this clock was called an astrolabe, which was an ancient type of instrument used by astronomers during the Bronze Age to make observations of star positions etcetera etcetera etcetera...

The point is that she told me what it was before placing this incredibly rare antique object onto this wall for us to examine together, but now that I think about it more carefully now that we've traveled through time using this thing... Well... Now that I think about it more carefully now that we've traveled through time using this thing... Now that I look at this clock carefully now... What exactly is this?

Is this an astrolabe? No... This doesn't look anything like an astrolabe now that I take a closer look at it now... This doesn't match up with any description of an astrolabe which means no one can tell what this device is meant for now... But... But if someone who knew what this device supposedly did were to see what this device actually does right now based on how things are going right now... Based on how things turned out right now after she pulled out this clock from one of her pockets while we were walking home from school together like normal everyday kids...
