Resolve of a Father's Choice

Lucian, an old yet wise man in Celtic-occupied Europe during the 2nd century BCE, stood at a crossroads, pondering his future and the future of his daughter Nerva. For years he had struggled to make a living with their meager possessions and income, and had remained out of an urge to honor his ancestry.

That day, a mysterious man appeared and presented Lucian with a tempting invitation of a new life in a far away land. Overwhelmed, yet determined, the old man began to weigh out his options between staying and leaving. A long and deep gaze was exchanged between Lucian and his daughter, for he knew only she truly understood what he was going through. In a broken voice, he revealed that he had been invited to a life of abundance, but would it be worth it? Though he was struggling, the ties within his family were strong - would leaving serve as a betrayal that could not be mended? Watching her father wrestle with his inner turmoil ached Nerva’s heart.

I - Climbing towards the

At last, Lucian mustered up the courage to announce that he wanted to accept the invitation in search of a new beginning. Nerva, filled with excitement and trepidation, offered to accompany him. Lucian felt immense guilt - Nerva was still a young girl, should this risk really be taken? Before he knew it, the two of them had left their home, vowing never to forget their roots.

As days passed by, Lucian and Nerva experienced both anguish and elation in their new land. Though they had found independence and financial security, they lacked the familial love and support they had left behind. Slowly but surely, their relationship deepened as they opened up to each other, sharing their innermost thoughts.

Eventually, as the two’s journey progressed, they faced an unexpected twist in the road. Despite the plentiful rewards, the mysterious man failed to keep his end of the bargain - revealing his faked identity, stealing their savings, and leaving them stranded in an unfamiliar situation. With no means of returning home, Nerva and Lucian had to make a new way for themselves, but with the looming fear of betrayal everpresent.

The two aimlessly wandered from town to town, finding hopelessness at every turn. Lucian became increasingly distant as despair seemed to press onto both him and his daughter, yet Nerva vowed to never lose hope. Eventually they ended up in a desolate town, where Lucian was immediately swarmed with disdainful opinions and threats. At its worst - revealed threats of being dishonored and put to death - Lucian knew Nerva needed her father more than ever, despite his declining faith in himself. He decided to prove that nothing would uproot him and claimed he would not accept failure, demanding Nerva join him on a dramatic conference against all the odds.

Gathered in the main hall were all the distasteful townspeople waiting to hear out Lucian and his plea. After carefully constructing his thought-provoking speech riddled with cleverness and deception, Lucian convinced the people to accept a new way of life he had proposed for the community whom had longed for better conditions for years. Through Lucian and Nerva’s deep love for each other, he regained his courage and was able to convince a skeptical crowd about the love two strangers had brought with them when they arrived. This romance and yearning for quality free from oppression prevailed in their minds. Cheers erupted from the people once they heard the proposal as they saw potential they had not had. His incisive words cut right to their hearts, and despite the audaciousness of his final suggestion to become a leader, it was accepted without questioning.

Everyone was dumbfounded as Lucian became the new ruler of the land and rebuilt an entire infrastructure from scratch with his family. The joy of success and newfound prosperity flowed through everyone’s veins as they celebrated this achievement together. Though life would never be the same again - with newfound recognition, power and resources - the joy of writing the beginning of their destiny with Lucian and Nerva was clear and the reflective conclusion felt palpably satisfying for all involved.
