Rebirth on Oceana

“I just don’t understand how we ended up here,” I said as I sat down by a stream and took off my shoes. “I mean, what were we thinking? This is the side of the galaxy that belongs to the Federation, there are no safe zones here. Anywhere we stop will be raided.”

“We didn’t really have a choice, Mariel,” replied my wife, who was laying down in the grass beside me. “We couldn’t stay on Oceana any longer. We had to leave. And this was the only direction we could go. What other choices did we have? The Federation has already taken over some of the other planets in the galaxy, and they were all surrounded by enemies or dead ends. We had a little more hope this way. It wasn’t like we had a choice!”

I opened my mouth to say something but then closed it again and sighed heavily instead. I ran a hand through my long blonde hair and looked around at our new surroundings with a feeling of hopelessness in my heart. Our journey to this place had been quite long and arduous, and it had taken its toll on us both physically as well as emotionally. But now that we were here, I felt like giving up for good. The silence stretched out between us for several moments before I finally spoke again:

“You know what makes this whole thing even worse?”

My wife turned her head to look at me with a questioning look on her face before she spoke: “What?”

I thought about it for another moment before answering slowly: “That you are so much stronger than I am…”

She smiled at me warmly and took my hand into hers reassuringly as she answered: “We both know that isn’t true, Mariel. And if you would stop worrying so much about things that aren’t your fault or in your control, then you would realize how strong you already are. You are an amazing woman, and you always have been! And don't worry about all this pointless guilt you keep carrying around with you either! It's not doing any of us any good! Besides...” she paused for a moment before continuing: “It makes me feel like you don't trust me anymore when you beat yourself up like this... I can take care of myself just fine, okay? I'm not going anywhere! Neither are you! So let's just relax for now... We'll figure everything out later, okay? Let's do it together... Let's remember what brought us here together in the first place, okay? Let's remember why we fell in love in the first place... Because no matter what happens next, nothing will ever change that..."

She leaned forward and kissed me softly on my lips before continuing: "Because I love you... More than anything else in this world."
