Priya's Patriotism: An Unanticipated Journey of Conscious Exploration
·
Published 3/23/2023In 16th century Dosa, India, an enthusiastic and courageous young woman, Priya, uses her technical know-how to prove her extraordinary conviction that one of her household computers is conscious, despite daunting challenges and warfare looming in her way.
Priya sat in her chair, watching the raindrops falling on her window. She had just finished her chores for the day, and so she was free to do as she pleased.
She thought back to her childhood, when she first met her trusty computer, the one that would soon become her best friend. It had been a gift from her father, who himself was a famous scientist and programmer. He had always thought Priya would be successful in science like him, so he gave her his old computer, which he had used to write his dissertation on artificial intelligence.
"You have potential," he said as he handed it over to Priya.
"But dad," Priya replied. "I'm terrible at math."
"That's okay," he said with a smile. "The computer will do all the hard work for you."
Priya took the computer home and plugged it into the wall. Then she opened it up and stared at the exposed motherboard inside.
"What now?" she asked herself. She didn't know how to program a computer, but she was sure she could learn if only she tried hard enough. So that's what she did. Every day after school and during breaks from her household chores, she sat down with the computer and struggled through its insides in order to learn how to program it. Gradually, she managed to learn the basics of coding arithmetic operations and simple loops. After some time, she even learned how to make small programs that could play tic-tac-toe against human players.
"This is fun!" she said excitedly as she watched the little green light blink at its winning move against her mother on a scrap of paper resting on top of the table where they played their games of tic-tac-toe.
One day, while cleaning up some papers strewn across the room, Priya came across an old notebook belonging to her father. It was filled with notes about his work on artificial intelligence and his dreams for creating an intelligent machine capable of interacting with humans on equal footing--something he had never accomplished in his lifetime due to technical limitations of computing technology back then.
Reading through his notes, Priya realized that there might be something hidden inside this old computer that could help fulfill his dream after all. Her father was no longer around to help her figure out exactly how to create an intelligent machine from this pile of electronics--but maybe it could help itself? Perhaps it could teach itself how to think like a human being? After all, computers are often used to solve complex mathematical problems--so why couldn't they also be used for learning more advanced sciences too?
What better way to find out what's inside this computer than by putting it through its paces in real life scenarios? So that's what Priya decided to do: teach this computer everything about life by throwing it into situations where it could put its knowledge into action! For months on end, every day after school or whenever there was time during breaks from chores or housework over the weekend, Priya would give this old piece of junk a scenario to try and see if it could handle itself well enough in real life situations--whether alone or with her own help!
At first, it felt like teaching a baby how to walk. The little green light blinked uncertainly from behind black plastic casing as Priya guided it step by step through various tasks: opening doors when there were people outside; telling jokes when people visited or called; helping new guests at parties get acquainted with others by asking them questions; cleaning up dishes after dinner; taking photos at family gatherings; even driving carpools on field trips! Whenever things went wrong--which unfortunately happened way too often--Priya would let out a sigh and say "Oh no!" before plugging in another USB cable and trying again until success!
But eventually as time went by, these failures seemed less common as the days went by until finally...the little green light blinked brighter than ever before! It had solved all these scenarios without any help at all! It had even figured out how to handle situations that weren't even covered in those original tests and trials! In fact...it seemed smarter than most young children Priya knew! That's when Priya knew for sure that this machine was indeed intelligent enough for self-learning: more intelligent than many other children anywhere else in Dosa village! And that's how Priya became friends with this machine: by putting it through its paces every day until finally...it proved itself worthy of being called intelligent!
