Sword of Shadows

Published 7/31/2023When Ichigo Kurosaki, a fearless high school student, gains the power to battle supernatural beings, he takes on the role of a soul reaper to protect the world from Hollows. Armed with his Black Swordman abilities, he embarks on a perilous journey filled with banter and danger to save humanity, learning the true consequences and inspiring others with his unwavering valor.

The battle field was quiet as the last slab of stone was removed. The light shone in, illuminating the dust within the room. In a corner lay a figure, covered in blood and dust.
“Is it her?” A voice asked.
“Yes.” I replied, my voice slightly hoarse from exhaustion. I had been fighting that monster for hours now. My sword was dented and scratched, my clothes were torn in many places and my hands were bleeding from where the cuts on my arms had reopened. But she was safe, that is all that mattered to me.
As we approached the body, I could make out her features more clearly. Her black hair lay matted to her head, her pale skin covered in dust and bruises from where she had hit the walls when I had knocked her away from me earlier. Her eyes were closed and a trickle of blood ran out of her mouth, staining the white sheets beneath her crimson red.
I kneeled down beside her bed and placed a hand on her forehead, feeling for a pulse. She was alive! As if the gods themselves had answered my prayers, I felt a steady beat beneath my fingers and I sighed with relief. Then it hit me; how did she survive? She should have been dead after taking that many direct hits from Hollows; they are some of the strongest creatures there are and yet she was still here.
I looked up at the man who stood behind me as he entered the room followed by two others who carried equipment with them into the small bedroom. “Excuse me sir…” I whispered hoarsely as I got up to let them in.
“Agent Ichigo Kurosaki at your service ma’am..” He responded smartly while removing his suit jacket and rolling up his sleeves before approaching the child with one of his subordinates carrying a bag behind him. “How can I help you today?” He continued as he sat down beside me on the bedside table and started rolling up his own sleeve to reveal an intricate tattoo on his arm which shimmered blue as it slowly revealed itself from under his shirt sleeve.
I smiled at him kindly before answering his question “This child here… Can you save her?” The agent paused for a moment before replying seriously “You know this girl right? Is she family or something?” His face softened slightly when he saw my expression change to one of shock briefly before returning to its usual impassive mask once again. “She is not family… She is my sister… She has special powers like you do but they are not meant to be used against enemies outside of this world… She doesn't understand what they can do yet so please be careful not to hurt her too much with those special techniques ok?” Agent Ichigo laughed slightly at this statement before responding “Don't worry about that; we're professionals here…. Besides no one has died during treatment yet so don't worry ma'am … Now if you'll excuse me though; I need to get started before she wakes up... This will only take about 2 minutes but you might want to wait outside until it's over ok? We'll call you if anything goes wrong... You can wait in the front room with Agent Neliel eh? She's our best nurse working today so don't worry about your little sister ok? We'll take good care of her for you.. Now please excuse us for just a moment... Thank you very much for helping us today ma’am... Please take these cookies as a gift from us since your little sister has helped us so much today… Enjoy! Ok then.. Bye!.. Lets get started!.. Aizen-soutaichou would kill us if we didn't wrap this up quick enough… *grumble grumble* … Damn kids…" Agent Ichigo mumbled quietly under his breath as he turned back towards his work bench to retrieve his tools while shaking his head ruefully at their boss before turning back towards me once again "Now please wait outside ok?" He said smiling reassuringly at me as he led his team towards their patient while licking off some cookie crumbs which were stuck to his face.
As I waited in the front room, my heart raced with a mixture of anticipation and worry. Seeing my sister lying there, battered and broken, filled me with an overwhelming sense of responsibility. What had brought her to this state? How had she come face-to-face with those Hollows?
Agent Neliel, the best nurse of the team, stood beside me with a kind smile on her face. She reached out and gently patted my shoulder. "Don't worry, we'll take good care of her," she reassured me. "Agent Ichigo and his team are the best in the business."
I nodded, appreciating her words of comfort. But deep down inside, I couldn't help but feel an uncertainty gnawing at me. Special powers or not, my sister was only a child. How was I supposed to protect her from the dangers of this world that she didn't even understand?
Minutes turned into hours as I anxiously waited for news. The front room was filled with the sounds of people going about their business, the quiet hum of medical machinery, and the occasional hushed conversation. Each passing moment stretched my nerves, and I couldn't help but pace back and forth across the room.
Finally, the door to my sister's room swung open, and Agent Ichigo emerged with a weary smile on his face. I rushed towards him, my heart pounding in my chest. "Is she okay?" I asked, barely able to contain my fear.
Agent Ichigo nodded. "She's stable now," he said, his voice filled with a hint of exhaustion. "We were able to heal her injuries and stabilize her powers. It seems that her abilities were acting up, attracting the attention of those Hollows."
Relief washed over me, a wave crashing against the shores of my anxiety. My sister was going to be alright. She was safe.
"But," Agent Ichigo continued, his expression growing somber, "your sister's powers are unique, and they can be dangerous if left unchecked. She has tremendous potential, but without proper guidance, she could unintentionally cause harm to herself or others."
I listened intently as Agent Ichigo explained the situation. He talked about a place where young people with special abilities like my sister's were trained and taught to control their powers. A place called the Tsukiyomi Academy.
"I understand your concerns," he said, his eyes filled with sincerity. "But allowing your sister to join the academy would be the best way for her to learn and grow in a safe environment. We will provide her with the necessary tools and guidance to control her powers and use them for good."
The weight of his words settled on my shoulders, and the image of my sister in that hospital bed made the decision clear. I wanted her to have a chance at a normal life, free from the dangers that lurked in the shadows.
With a determined nod, I looked at Agent Ichigo and said, "I'll do whatever it takes to ensure her safety and happiness. Take her to the Tsukiyomi Academy. Help her become the best version of herself."
Agent Ichigo placed a hand on my shoulder, a sense of respect shining in his eyes. "You're making the right decision," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "We'll take care of her, and together, we'll help her unleash her true potential."
As he turned to lead the way to the transport waiting outside, I couldn't help but feel a mixture of sadness and hope. My sister was about to embark on a new journey, one that would shape her destiny. And as for me, I vowed to protect her from afar, always by her side, even if just in spirit.
With a final glance at the hospital room where my sister had fought so bravely, I stepped forward, ready to embrace the challenges that lay ahead. For in the darkness, there was always a glimmer of light, guiding us towards a future filled with endless possibilities.
