Oi and the Sandstorm of Fate
·
Published 4/3/2023A brave and spirited young camel, Oi, faces a ruthless sandstorm threatening his Middle Eastern village and must rely on his daring, magical jinni friend and the courage of his community to save the day and secure a happily ever after.
At noon, I sat on the little hill, chewing my cud, gazing off into the distance. The sun was hot and bright, but it was a good day. A good day to be alive.
The wind started blowing, picking up speed until it filled the sky with clouds of sand. I jumped up and ran towards the village. "Get inside!" I screamed as loud as my lungs would let me. "A Sandstorm is coming!"
"What are you talking about? It's perfectly clear out," said one of the village elders. He sat on a desert rock, fishing pole in hand, staring intently at his line as if he were trying to catch a fish that was swimming through the air instead of on water.
"No! It's not just clear! Look!" I pointed at the swirling clouds in the distance. Eventually, it would be here. Some of the villagers began to follow me towards the safety of our houses, others ignored me and continued their activities as though nothing were wrong. They never listened to me anyway.
Once we reached shelter, I told them what I had seen in the swirling sands and how dangerous it would be if anyone left their homes during a storm. They laughed at me and told me that they knew what they were doing and didn't need my advice anymore. Even my mother looked annoyed by my presence in her home and said she had decided to take a nap until it passed. That was so like her; whenever anything bad happened she would go to her room and sleep until someone could wake her up again with good news or until things got better by themselves.
The wind was already stronger now, picking up dust from all over the oasis and filling everything with grit. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, a huge gust blew through our village and knocked down most of the houses that hadn't been built strong enough to withstand strong winds. This wasn't going to end well for us at all!
I went outside again and tried to help drag some of the houses back onto their feet again but there was no hope for them now; they were destroyed beyond repair! Kids were crying because they lost their precious toys that were now buried under piles of rubble and sand dunes were growing like crazy in every corner of the village where there used to be dry ground before this storm hit us!
My father walked over to me with a pile of carpentry tools hanging off his belt. With tears running down his face he took one last look at his home before turning around and walking away in defeat while saying "We're done for." Nobody else bothered to help him; this village was doomed! All we could do was try to save ourselves now that we couldn't rely on our houses anymore for protection against these terrible Sandstorms!
I noticed something then: not everyone had been taken by surprise by this sudden turn of events! There was somebody standing atop one of our ruined houses who seemed determined not only to survive but also to rescue us from this terrible situation! My eyes followed him as he climbed onto another roof where he threw open a wooden chest that he had been holding onto so tightly until now! He pulled out some golden rocks from it and shouted something which made them glow brightly even under all this dusty sand flying everywhere outside! Then he threw them into the air one after another where each one turned into a big glowing man who landed on various places in our village with big smiles on their faces! Everybody stared at them confusedly but then they began helping us lift some things off the floor back onto their proper places where they belonged before all this had happened! Most people cheered when they saw that they could now put everything back together again instead of just looking at an empty mess all over our village! Things seemed brighter immediately when more people showed up with carpentry tools too where everyone took turns digging through piles of rubble looking for anything valuable or useful enough to save somehow before everything got covered by sand again without warning later today or tomorrow morning at worst...
I saw Oi throw another golden rock into the air before disappearing himself into thin air, leaving only two glowing men behind who were busy lifting two large pieces of wood high above their heads where they fit them together into something much taller than both men combined before they disappeared too after giving each other high fives while laughing loudly towards each other! At least Oi seemed nice enough that way; always ready for adventure despite his small size which made him an easy target for bigger animals like snakes who tried to eat him once already when he fell asleep inside a hole where I used to live alongside my mother... But his jinni friend saved him then before grabbing him by his tail and pulling him out of danger with ease while everybody else just watched helplessly before slowly walking away...
As time passed many more villagers arrived with more things that needed rescuing from certain destruction but nobody really talked much anymore since there never really was much conversation taking place between us here in our desert village anyway so maybe nobody really cared anymore either... Except for Oi who kept working hard like everybody else did now because once you give up hope everything is lost anyway so why bother? We all had family members waiting for us back home after all... And there were still plenty of things left which needed saving from being buried underneath sand dunes by these terrible storms which always came without warning after all since nobody ever managed to predict these storms or find ways to stop them from materializing out of nowhere except for Oi's magic jinni friends who kept helping us ever since Oi discovered them yesterday afternoon by accident when climbing inside an old wooden box which turned out not to be empty after all... The trickiest part is knowing exactly where they will appear next time so we can continue rescuing things before this village gets buried under more sand than usual which happens every few months after all... So far I haven't found any pattern yet even though Oi keeps reminding everyone what happened yesterday afternoon when each new Sandstorm appears unexpectedly... But eventually we'll figure it out eventually if everyone keeps working hard enough together like we did today because there are only so many things you can save without getting tired after all...
