"It was the greatest day of my life. I was finally free."

"I remember thinking to myself that the key to happiness was independence from the rest of the world. I wanted nothing more than to be free from all responsibilities, to live a solitary existence where I could wander the open road at will, with only my bike as company. At least that's what it felt like when I set off that morning."

The sun rose over the horizon as he took his first steps on the path ahead. A cool wind blew past him, making his hair stand on end and sending his loose shirt flapping in the air behind him. He couldn't wipe the smile off his face and he knew without a doubt that this would be the start of an incredible journey.

A few kilometres into the ride, he stopped by a small cafe in a small town named São Jose dos Campos, just outside of São Paulo. After a quick stop there, he continued on his way westwards towards Rio de Janeiro. As he rode along, he became more and more excited about discovering new things and seeing new places. And so he went on for several days until he made it to Salvador da Bahia in northeastern Brazil.

He arrived in Salvador in late August and decided to spend a couple of weeks there before heading back northwards towards São Paulo. One afternoon after spending some time sunbathing at the beach, he decided to have dinner at a small restaurant in Barra which was located close to Ponta de Areia beach. He was sitting on a stool at the bar having a conversation with one of the waiters when someone approached him from behind and tapped him on his shoulder. "Excuse me, are you Daniel?" The man asked in English with an American accent. "Yes, yes I am." Daniel replied while turning around to look at him with a puzzled expression on his face. "My name is James and I'm here with my family on vacation, we just moved here not too long ago." James offered Daniel his hand, which Daniel shook quickly before asking "How do you know my name and also how did you find me here?" "Oh don't worry about that," replied James as he reached into his pocket and pulled out an old-looking piece of paper, "your father gave us this address and told us that if we ever met you then we should give it to you." James handed Daniel the sheet of paper which appeared to be an old map showing where they lived together with their phone number written down on it beneath their address. Daniel looked surprised as he tried to hold back tears but after several moments he managed to regain control over himself again before saying: "Thank you very much! This means so much...it really does! I'll give you my number so that we can stay in touch and maybe meet up sometime too!" They exchanged numbers before shaking hands again and saying goodbye before they went their separate ways while thinking about how their lives could have been different if they had had more time together as a family before now. Daniel thought about all those years of being angry with his parents for moving away from Brazil when suddenly one thought popped into his head: 'Maybe they truly did see something special in me after all! Maybe they always knew that I would grow up to be something great!' He then smiled and carried on eating his meal while enjoying the view outside from one of the large windows looking onto the beach below before walking back home later that evening feeling renewed by such thoughts about himself and excited about what else lay ahead for him now that he was free once again!
