Outrun Darkness: The Martian Church Mystery

I could feel the warm blood trickling down my face, and the pain in my back. All I wanted to do was lay there. To let the warmth seep into me and make me forget everything that had happened to me today.

But I couldn't. My grandmother always told me your life flashes in front of you before you die.

Mine wasn't flashing. It was more like a slideshow. Images slowly fading in and out. Like someone was rewinding my life, then fast forwarding through it again at different parts. First I was graduating from highschool, then next I'm driving off to college, then my parents' funeral, then meeting Jeremy, and so on.

I didn't like it, so instead of letting myself drift off into it, I decided to get up and move on with my life. The world still hadn't stopped moving around me. The wind rustled the grasses behind me as if teasing me, telling me that I needed to keep running or else I would end up dead like so many other people who had passed by this place. I wondered how many of them had been foolish enough to stop here and rest after they were injured, unaware that danger could be lurking nearby.

I pushed these thoughts aside as I continued deeper into the cave system hiding underneath the rocky Martian landscape. A mix of curiosity and fear drove me forward until I found myself standing before a massive door crafted from oak wood, adorned with gold leaf engravings. These doors seemed more fitting for Earth-bound cathedrals or churches, yet here they stood on Mars – a testament to the cultists' unwavering faith despite the lack of evidence supporting their beliefs.

As I forced open the door, a musty scent filled the air, causing me to cough twice before acclimating. The room beyond was dimly lit by candles lining the walls, stretching so far into the darkness that I could only wonder how many more there could be. My mind wandered to absurd, fleeting thoughts of wax-loving aliens inhabiting these candles or even dwelling within our bodies and souls. However preposterous, I couldn't help but acknowledge that humankind's tendency to dismiss the unconventional had led to division and strife.

We'd become separated by beliefs in science or religion, forgetting the importance of unity and respect for differences among our species. The cultists may have seemed misguided, but their intent to protect humanity from the evils they believed in was pure. Their dedication to their faith had been crucial in preserving our existence through difficult times.

As I stood in that dimly lit chamber, contemplating the consequences of further dividing our species based on beliefs, I realized that each side held merit. Science had indisputably advanced our society in many ways, yet faith provided solace and meaning for so many people. It was time to abandon the notion that one is inherently better than the other; instead, we should embrace and respect the values that make us human.

No longer did I see the need to castigate those who held different beliefs or punish them for perceived transgressions dictated by faith-based doctrines. What humanity needed was understanding, empathy, and open-mindedness to move forward as one entity, making the most of our time in this shared existence.

With newfound clarity, I moved past the ancient doorway and into the unknown. Together, we could create a future where science and faith coexisted peacefully, fostering a harmonious and tolerant society built upon the foundation of our collective uniqueness.
