Mask of a Menace: Gary's Outlandish Story in the Dramatic Future of Brazil.
·
Published 5/2/2023Spirited Gary, determined to fit the college-aged stereotype despite his premature balding head, must devise a way to protect his roommate Tom, and his own identity, when a shocking reveal threatens to expose their daring secret: both men wear hair systems to mask their balding scalps.

Gary and Tom were roommates in college, but they didn't look alike at first.
It was the 80's, and Gary looked like a young Bill Gates. He was tall, handsome, and had thick curly hair.
Tom looked more like Michael J. Fox from Back to the Future. He was short, skinny, with a receding hair line.
He first met Gary at orientation week when he sat down next to him on the bus ride to campus.
"So...what dorm you live in?" Gary asked, putting his feet up on the back of the seat in front of them.
"Lincoln," Tom responded nervously, adjusting his glasses that kept sliding down his nose.
"Oh yeah? I'm in Lincoln too!" Gary said excitedly, as if it was a coincidence that he would be living with someone who wanted to be his friend. "I'm Gary."
"I'm Tom."
Gary smiled and nodded, "Cool! We're going to have so much fun together this year!"
Tom wasn't really sure how to respond. He enjoyed video games and thought it would be cool to meet someone else who did too. But he wasn't sure about rooming with someone he just met for the entire year. He hadn't even met any of his other roommates yet! What if they all hated each other? Then what? Suddenly his fear was interrupted by Gary talking again as he continued looking out the window at the passing trees.
"I'm an English major," he said proudly. "What are you into?"
"Video games..." Tom mumbled quietly, not expecting another question since Gary stopped asking him questions after he answered the first one.
Gary turned around and leaned forward towards Tom, "That's awesome! My roommate last year played video games all night long! I'll bet we will have so much fun together!"
Tom nodded silently again as they pulled up to their dorms and got off the bus. Moments later they were standing outside their assigned rooms, which were between each other's in the hallway of their dormitory building. They entered their rooms simultaneously, meeting up again in the doorway of Gary's room where he continued talking again without giving Tom a chance to talk at all first: "I'm going to bring my Super Nintendo over tonight so we can play Mario World! You've got some games don't you?" So far, Tom was starting to think his new roommate might be clinically insane.
The rest of that day went by rather quickly for both roommates after they unpacked all their stuff and arranged it on opposite ends of their rooms until they were ready to play video games later that night after dinner in the cafeteria downstairs. Tom pondered about the confusion surrounding Gary's name - whether it's 'Gary' or 'Garry'. He finally decided to call him 'Gary', since that's how it sounded to him.
"Sorry dude, I gotta run... Gotta go eat dinner! See ya later!" Gary said as Tom stood there, puzzled by his thoughts about Gary's name. Gary's sudden departure reminded Tom that he too had to grab dinner as hunger struck him with intense urgency. As he rushed to catch up with Gary, he thought about the various sandwiches available in the cafeteria, particularly craving a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
