Konstantinos's Captivating Odyssey
·
Published 3/18/2023Konstantinos embarks on an offbeat odyssee aboard the Iron Men, where he must overcome unexpected obstacles and use the help of his unique, colorful crewmates to learn more about himself and find true adventure in the idyllic small town of ancient Greece.
"Ahoy, Konstantinos!" said a voice in the night.
It was dark and quiet, the only light being from the stars and the moon itself, shining through the clouds. I opened my eyes and looked around my room, as if expecting someone to be there. I sat up in bed, listening for any further noises.
"Over here!" The voice seemed to be coming from outside of my house. I slowly got out of bed, put on some shoes and walked over to the window. I saw something in the distance. It was hard to make out what it was, but it seemed like a boat floating on top of the water, rather than moving through it. "Come outside!" After observing it for a moment longer, I woke up my family and led them all outside to see what was causing such a ruckus.
"Ahoy! Do you have a moment, Konstantinos?" I didn't know who it was talking to me, but he seemed familiar with me.
As we approached the boat, we noticed that there were sailors walking around on it's deck instead of on water; they were busy getting things ready for an expedition. We all climbed onto the boat and stood close to one another so we could talk without shouting across the gap between us and them. Before anyone could say anything though, one of the sailors called out "All hands on deck!" And everyone rushed to their assigned positions so they could depart quickly. After taking their positions and making sure everything was ready for departure, the captain spoke: "Cast off!" As soon as everyone heard this command they all pulled up on whatever rope they were holding onto, and the boat began moving like one of those paddle boats at a lake or riverbank. The sailors went back to whatever they had been doing before that interruption as if nothing had happened. My family and I were still standing there dumbfounded at how quickly they set sail; by the time we recovered ourselves enough to speak again we were already far away from land and hadn't even noticed until now because everyone on board was so busy working that they didn't even look up when we boarded them.
We decided to start asking questions about where exactly we were going. The first person we talked to was a sailor leaning against the railing watching his crewmates do what needed to be done: "Where are we going? Why are we going there? What is this whole trip about?" he turned around when he realized that someone was speaking to him; looking at us curiously he answered our questions: "We're going wherever we want! Wherever our hearts desire! We're gonna go find new lands! We're gonna find treasure! We're gonna find adventure! We're gonna find gold! We're gonna find love! We're gonna find happiness! We're gonna live life again." He then picked up his crossbow, threw an arrow into it, aimed towards somewhere in front of him (probably just in case something appeared), and continued: "Life is short man... You gotta make every second count while you still can! That's why we're not sailing across water or ground anymore" he emphasized this last part by gesturing towards his crewmates who were indeed climbing ropes and ladders along with everything else they needed to do; "We're flying across the sky" he finished by pointing upwards towards something that looked like rigging holding sails aloft; "We've got wings you know!" He then went back to watching his crewmates work for a bit before saying "Well anyway gotta get back to work." And with that he resumed his previous activities in silence again.
We asked other sailors about their reasons for joining this journey too: "I'm here because I want respect" said one; "I'm here because I want power" said another; "I'm here because I want riches" said yet another sailor; "I'm here because I want fame." They all joined for their own reasons; which surprises me because when these men told me why they joined this crew I thought they would have similar responses: after all, isn't adventure kind of adventurous? Still though each person has their own reason for wanting what it is that they want- even if their reasons are horribly selfish- which makes sense considering how many people are usually willing to sacrifice themselves for things like money- or whatever else this crew is looking for- even if it means putting themselves in danger or something along those lines. But hey, at least these guys have hearts that aren't made entirely of stone like most other people's seem to be nowadays...
