Adera's Quest to Conquer Darkness
·
Published 4/5/2023An adventure-prone wizard-in-training, Adera, embarks on a quest to save her world from an ancient evil, facing misadventures, unexpected rivals, and discovering that true power stems from within.
For hundreds of years, the Realm had lived in peace. The King’s great-grandfather had brought the land together, after defeating the Dark Lord in a great and terrible battle. He had bound evil to sleep within a mountain and deep sea, that they might never again be free to roam the land.
Then one day, the peace was shattered. The Dark Lord had been seen again, lurking in the shadows of legend. A few of his spies were captured and confirmed what all feared: he was awake and gathering strength for his return. At first, many denied it. But soon, more spies were caught, and some of them confirmed what their comrades had said.
The Realm panicked. They sent an army to hunt down these enemies as they hid among them. But somehow, they found no one at all. Then they started spying on each other instead of hunting - but that did not yield any results either. Many people began fearing for themselves; others feared for their families or friends.
Adera was not afraid though - she was young and full of confidence in her abilities, and she knew she would be able to help defeat the Dark Lord. She set out to find him, with nothing but a few coins in her pocket and three loyal companions who went with her because they were either too naive or too loyal to say no.
They spent weeks traveling along the coastal road from the capital city where Adera had lived all her life, northwards towards the place where the Dark Lord was supposed to be. During this time, Adera taught her companions things about magic she'd learned from her master during her apprenticeship - simple spells like lighting a fire or healing minor wounds with herbs instead of using stinging nettles or applying cold water compresses to burned skin (which was painful and not very effective). She also taught them about the Realm's history; about how it came into existence, about why the Dark Lord tried to conquer it in his first reign over a hundred years ago - why he failed and why he was now trying again; how he had been defeated by King Adlan's ancestor who used wisdom as well as strength to fight him off; how his power has been slowly growing ever since; and how they were going to stop him again this time around - by finding him before he grew too strong and putting an end to him once and for all.
After two weeks on the road, they finally reached their destination: a small village called Fjelstrup on top of a low hill surrounded by a dense forest made up of fir trees mixed with shrubs and flowery bushes which climbed up along steep cliffs until you could see the sea down below between their branches. While most villages in this region were built near rivers or lakes so that people could easily get drinkable water from them when necessary, this one lacked such luxury - there were no rivers nearby except for some small streams flowing during heavy rainfalls or snow melts in the nearby mountains. The villagers, therefore, were forced to build their houses on top of hills, making travel easier when they needed to venture beyond their isolated home. Unfortunately for them, this meant their village was extremely vulnerable if anyone wanted to attack them; an invader could simply walk up these hills from below under the cover of darkness, unnoticed until it was too late.
This is precisely what happened during the war against the Dark Lord one hundred years ago. His army silently descended upon the village at night while everyone slept, catching them completely off guard. However, now thanks to Adera's efforts, some people were more aware and vigilant. When they saw something suspicious at night, they would grab a weapon and investigate cautiously, determined not to let danger surprise them as it had in the past.
So if there truly were individuals out there watching Fjelstrup secretly from the shadows beyond its borders, Adera probably wouldn't have noticed them anyway even if she had walked past earlier in the night. She would've been safe inside her house at that time, and many others in the village doing the same. As a result, perhaps no one noticed anything unusual after all.
