I'm a good man, I am. I've seen things. Horrifying things, like a man being ripped in half by an undead creature, or a woman's head being cut off by a beast so large and cruel that it was better to just cover your eyes and pray that the screams would stop soon.

But even my heart is breaking today.

They say she's the witch. The one who brought this plague upon us all. They say she's the one who killed everyone and now we need to kill her back to free our people of their curse. But I know better than that.

I saw her this morning. She was with the monks, trying to save them from an evil spirit that was chasing them through the woods. I had my sword ready, but when I saw her face... it just seemed wrong. She looked like a human girl, beautiful and full of grace and life - nothing like the monster everyone says she is. Even now as we ride away from the monastery, she looks at me with those big eyes of hers and I can see fear there, true fear. Those big eyes are pleading me with everything they have not to do what I'm planning on doing right now.

"It's time," I say to my men, my voice quivering as much as my hands. "We're here."

The demon Quo stands by a bonfire surrounded by her minions, some of whom look at me curiously as they realize what a big mistake they made trusting in such a vile creature. They are brave hearts though and they don't let go of her even as we approach them carrying our swords high in the air like trophies we just killed an enemy with.

Quo looks from me to the girl behind me - Yuan - and then back again to me, a mocking grin on her face that makes me want to grab her by the throat and strangle her until she stops breathing forever. "And who do you think you are?" She asks with disgust dripping from every word she speaks like poison from a snake's fangs. "The great hero of China? No, you're too small for that title." She lets out a laugh that sounds more like barks of derision than anything else before continuing: "Maybe you are just some killer looking for fame? Maybe you will be famous after killing the greatest witch ever born after all!" Her smile grows wider still at these words while Yuan hides behind me while trembling slightly. Her fear clouds my senses though and distracts me enough that Quo manages to kick dirt in my face before pulling out a dagger from within her robes and pointing it at Yuan's throat threateningly while saying: "Drop your weapon or she dies."

Biting my lip hard enough to draw blood, I put down my sword slowly and then kneel on both knees in front of Yuan, putting my hands behind my head so Quo can tie them up together with some rope that was lying next to her on the floor of the cave where she had been hiding out until now. When Quo finishes tying me up with another piece of rope - this time around my ankles - she stands up with confidence radiating from every part of her body while smiling triumphantly at us both while saying: "Now pick up your sword and kill this filthy creature before it is too late."

As I sat there, bound and helpless, I could feel the weight of the world pressing down on my shoulders. How did it come to this? How did I go from being the one who would save our people, to being the one who would take the life of an innocent girl in cold blood? The irony of it all was suffocating, and I couldn't help but curse the twisted path that had led me here.

Yuan, trembling beside me, looked into my eyes with a plea for help. Her desperation mirrored my own, and in that moment, I made a silent promise to myself. No matter the cost, no matter the odds stacked against us, I would find a way to save her. I would not be another pawn in Quo's wicked game.

Taking a deep breath, I tried to muster the courage that had fueled me throughout this treacherous journey. Quo watched me with a smug satisfaction, completely oblivious to the fire burning deep within my soul. She had underestimated me, believing my spirit had been broken. But she was wrong. She had no idea of the depths a good man would go to protect the innocent.

"Before I kill her," I said, my voice steady and unwavering, "tell me, Quo. Do you truly believe that killing her will rid this land of its curse?"

Quo tilted her head, a flicker of confusion passing through her eyes. "Of course it will," she replied, the arrogance in her tone giving way to a trace of uncertainty. "She is the vessel of darkness. By her death, the curse shall be lifted."

I shook my head, a wry smile tugging at the corners of my lips. "No, Quo. The curse is not contained within her. It exists within the shadows that have plagued our land, within the malice and despair that thrive in the hearts of men. Killing Yuan will not eradicate it. It will only perpetuate the cycle of violence and suffering."

Quo's expression contorted with anger, her grip on the dagger tightening. She took a step towards me, her voice dangerously low. "You dare to question me? You, who cower before me? I will rid this world of you both!"

But even as Quo advanced, a sudden commotion echoed through the cavern. The ground beneath us trembled, and the fires surrounding us flickered and dimmed. Startled, Quo turned towards the disturbance, her attention momentarily diverted. It was in this moment of chaos that I saw my chance.

With a swift motion, I lunged forward, breaking free of my binds. The look of surprise that flashed across Quo's face was priceless. I snatched my sword from the ground, swinging it in her direction with all the determination I possessed. The blade sliced through the air, cutting through the tether that held Yuan captive.

As Quo stumbled back, clutching her wounded arm, I stepped protectively in front of Yuan. I stared Quo down, my voice dripping with defiance. "Your reign ends here, Quo. No longer will you manipulate and twist the lives of innocent people for your own gain."

Quo hissed, the darkness within her intensifying. "You cannot defeat me, mortal. I am the embodiment of all that is powerful and malevolent."

I took a step closer, the weight of my words reverberating through the cavern. "Perhaps you are right, Quo. But I am not alone. We are not alone. For even in the face of darkness, there is always light. And together, we will bring an end to your reign of terror."

As Quo lunged at us, her hands transformed into monstrous claws, I steadied my grip on the hilt of my sword. The battle that ensued was fierce, the clash of steel against claws echoing through the cavern. But with the support of my fellow warriors, those who had once doubted the true nature of this witch, we fought with a renewed vigor.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Quo was defeated. She lay defeated on the ground, her darkness seeping away like a dissipating fog. The curse that had tainted our land lifted, leaving behind a newfound hope and resilience.

As I turned to Yuan, her eyes filled with gratitude, I knew that this would not be the end of our journey. The path ahead would be filled with challenges and dangers, but we would face them together. With the bond of our shared experience, we would forge a future where good could triumph over evil, and love could conquer all.

And in that moment, as we stood amidst the aftermath of our victory, I couldn't help but believe that even a good man, faced with unimaginable horrors, could change the course of fate and bring about a better world.
