At first, I thought I was tripping.
I couldn’t speak, or move my body, but I could see and hear everything. My head was spinning with everything that was happening. First, there were two men fighting, then they started throwing rocks at each other! Then the guards came and started shooting them with bows and arrows! There were people running around everywhere; men were beating up smaller men while women watched from nearby. The women had red and yellow cloths on their heads, some of them were covered in white sheets.
Suddenly, I saw a flash of pink pass by me. It was a girl! She looked to be about my age, with deep brown hair and big green eyes. She was wearing a pink dress with long sleeves and a blue necklace on her neck. She looked almost exactly like the girls I see in my town everyday just walking around. But now, she was stumbling through the crowd, screaming for help. I wanted to call out to her, but I couldn’t move my mouth! I started panicking as it seemed like she would be trampled by everyone else when suddenly someone grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the crowd. It was one of the veiled women from earlier...with pink hair? The woman pulled the girl behind her body as they made their way to safety behind the wall of the citadel.
That's when it hit me: I wasn't in my own body.
I had been watching this scene unfold for what felt like forever when suddenly there was an explosion by where most of the fighting was taking place. A group of people dressed in dark clothing ran past me towards the center of town while everyone else ran away from it in a flurry of dust and panicked cries. One man ran straight past me and knocked me off balance as he turned to punch another man who had been running after him in the back. That's when I realized that my hands were tied behind my back! I tried to kick the man who had pushed me aside but he kicked me in my stomach before pulling out his dagger and cutting the ropes connecting my hands together before turning around to face his attacker. As soon as he turned around I got up onto my knees and rammed my head into his face as hard as I could, knocking him off balance and sending him sprawling to the ground. My head started pounding from hitting his face so hard but I didn't have time to worry about that as I reached down for his dagger with both hands (only one hand worked). This is why you never take your eyes off your opponent...when he got up he punched me right across the face, knocking me back down onto his knife. He put his foot on top of my chest before kicking it forward, slicing open my shirt and breaking several ribs while hitting something much harder than what should have been my skin (oh no...please don't let this be a ribcage). He dropped his knife onto the ground before reaching down to pick up a rock off of the ground while I lay there trying not to breathe too hard lest I cause more damage than already existed inside of me (what do you mean "inside"?!). The next thing that happened seemed like slow motion...he raised his hand high above his head before slamming it into mine and causing blood to spray all over both our faces before dropping me dead into an unconscious heap...or so he thought (huh?). When he bent over to see if I was still alive or not I caught sight of something shiny on his belt buckle...my cell phone (I can't believe you kept it there)! When he moved away from me again so that he could kick my body one last time for good measure (I really hope you're okay) I quickly swiped at his belt with my bound hands until finally catching hold of the device (Yes!). As soon as I felt it in between my fingers something strange happened: suddenly everything grew dark except for two glowing lights at opposite ends of an empty space...and then everything went black.
I woke up with a start, my heart pounding in my chest. The last thing I remembered was being in the middle of a violent confrontation. But now, as I opened my eyes, I realized I was lying on a soft bed in a dimly lit room. The air smelled of incense, and the sound of chanting filled the air.
I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through my ribs, reminding me of the injuries I had sustained. I winced and looked down to see a bandage wrapped tightly around my chest. How had I ended up here? And who had taken care of me?
Just as I began to ponder these questions, the door creaked open and a figure stepped into the room. It was the girl I had seen earlier, the one in the pink dress. She looked even more ethereal up close, her green eyes shimmering like emeralds in the soft light.
She approached me with a gentle smile, her voice filled with a soothing presence. "You may not remember, but my name is Amara. I found you injured and unconscious amidst the chaos. Luckily, I was able to bring you here and tend to your wounds."
I mustered a weak smile in return, grateful for her help. "Thank you, Amara. I don't know what would have happened to me if you hadn't intervened. But where am I?"
Amara's expression turned grave, and she took a seat at the edge of the bed. "This place is known as the Temple of Serenity. It is a sanctuary hidden from the chaos that engulfs the outside world. Here, we strive for peace and enlightenment."
I glanced around the room, noticing the intricate tapestries adorning the walls and the flickering candlelight casting dancing shadows. It felt like a world apart from the violence I had witnessed earlier. "But why did you bring me here? Do you know why I was in that conflict?"
Amara's voice grew somber as she nodded. "Those men fighting in the square, they belong to rival factions that have plagued our town for generations. Their senseless violence has caused so much pain and suffering. You, my friend, were caught in the crossfire. As for why you were there, I believe it was not a mere coincidence. Fate has brought you to us for a reason."
I furrowed my brow, the weight of her words sinking in. "What could be the reason? I'm just an ordinary person. I don't have any special abilities or knowledge."
Amara's eyes sparkled with determination as she leaned closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "I believe you possess a power within you, one that can bring harmony and healing to this torn world. You are a catalyst for change, and we need your help. The factions are on the brink of a war that could devastate our town. We must find a way to bring them together and end this cycle of violence."
I blinked, astonished by her words. Me? A catalyst for change? It seemed impossible, yet I couldn't shake the feeling that there was truth in what she said. Maybe there was something I could do to make a difference.
"Amara, I'm willing to help in any way I can," I said, my voice filled with newfound determination. "Tell me what I need to do."
A relieved smile spread across Amara's face. "I knew you would understand. We will start by gathering influential figures from each faction, those who are willing to listen and seek peace. Together, we will hold a meeting to discuss a resolution and find a way to bridge the divide."
As Amara explained the plan in greater detail, I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope ignite within me. This might not be the story I had expected, but it was a story worth telling. With Amara by my side, we would pave a path towards a better future, guided by the unyielding belief in the power of compassion and understanding.
And so, the journey to heal a fractured town began, with its unlikely hero and a girl in a pink dress leading the way. Sensing the weight of responsibility on my shoulders, I took a deep breath and prepared myself for the challenges ahead. Little did I know that this journey would not only change the lives of those around me but also reshape the course of my own destiny.
