Elara stood at the edge of the cliff, her heart pounding in her chest. The wind whipped through her hair, tugging at its braided strands. She looked down at the village below, its thatched roofs and stone walls crumbling and decayed. The once vibrant fields were now barren and lifeless.
A tear slipped down Elara's cheek as she thought of all she had lost. Her family, her friends, everything she had ever known. It had been five years since the Cataclysm, when magic had returned to the world and brought with it destruction and chaos.
Elara wiped away the tear and took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. She couldn't afford to let her emotions get the best of her. She had a job to do.
Closing her eyes, Elara reached out with her senses, searching for the familiar thread of magic that connected her to the world around her. It pulsed beneath her skin, warm and inviting.
Focusing on that energy, Elara extended it outward, feeling it flow through her like a river. With a wave of her hand, she commanded time to bend to her will.
The air shimmered before her as reality rippled like water. The village below shifted and changed, its crumbling buildings rebuilding themselves before Elara's eyes. The fields sprouted with new life as plants grew and flowers bloomed in fast-forward.
Elara smiled as she watched the transformation unfold. This was why she had been given this gift: to bring hope to those who had none.
But just as quickly as it began, the transformation ended. Reality snapped back into place like a rubber band being pulled taut.
Elara frowned in confusion. That wasn't right. She tried again, reaching out with her magic to manipulate time.
But nothing happened.
Panic surged through Elara's veins as she realized something was wrong. Her powers were gone.
Desperation clawed at her chest as she tried and failed to summon her magic. How was this possible? She had never had any trouble before.
A voice broke through Elara's thoughts, pulling her attention away from her panic.
"Having trouble, are we?"
Elara turned to see a figure standing at the edge of the cliff. The person was tall and cloaked in shadow, making it impossible to make out any defining features.
"Who are you?" Elara asked cautiously.
The figure chuckled, the sound sending a shiver down Elara's spine. "Does it matter? What matters is that I took your powers."
Elara's eyes widened in shock. "Took my powers? But how?"
The figure stepped forward into the light, revealing a face that sent a chill down Elara's spine. It was a face she recognized all too well: her own.
"I am you," the figure said with a wicked smile. "Or rather, I am what you could become."
Elara shook her head in disbelief. This couldn't be happening.
"Oh, but it is," the figure said, reading Elara's thoughts. "You see, your powers come with a price. And that price is your soul."
Elara felt her knees go weak as fear coursed through her veins. She had always known there was a risk in using her powers, but she hadn't realized just how high that risk was.
"Now," the figure said, stepping closer to Elara. "You have two choices: you can either accept your fate and join me in eternal darkness, or you can fight."
Elara looked into the eyes of her doppelganger and saw nothing but malice and cruelty staring back at her.
She knew then what she had to do.
Taking a deep breath, Elara reached deep within herself for strength she didn't know she possessed. She may have lost her powers, but she hadn't lost her will to fight.
With a defiant smile, Elara said, "I choose to fight."
The figure's smile faltered for a moment before being replaced with a look of amusement. "Very well," she said. "But know this: you cannot defeat me. I am your darkest fears and deepest desires. I am everything you could ever be."
Elara met the figure's gaze with unwavering determination. "We'll see about that."
