The shuttle touched down in a cloud of dust and debris. As the cloud settled, we could see the structure that had been built around the shuttles landing site. It was a simple shelter, but it would do.
The interior of the shuttle was dimly lit by emergency lights that were flashing blue, red and orange. I could see the captain's body still strapped into the forward control seat. The co-pilot was slumped over the controls with blood running from his ears and nose. He had been dead for several minutes already.
The first officer was still alive though, I could tell he was trying to get out of his seatbelt but he seemed unable to move as if he was paralyzed. I went over to him, "Sir are you okay?" I asked him, touching his shoulder lightly.
"It's no use Lieutenant, stay back." The first officer replied at me in a weak voice, he then gasped loudly as whatever affected him seemed to subside. He continued to try and get up out of his seat but he wasn't able to do so. "I don't know what happened, but it seems like we have run into some sort of alien life form."
He had seen something similar before on a previous mission, "But Sir is there anything we can do for you? We will find an antidote for whatever has happened."
"We don't have much time left," The First Officer replied with a deep sigh, "The ship has lost pressure and my air supply is running low."
"You mean...?" I asked him timidly.
"Yes," The First Officer explained, "I'm dying right now."
"I understand sir," I told him solemnly, "But please tell us what happened here."
"Well..." The First Officer started off hesitantly before continuing with more confidence, "We were on a survey mission when we came across some strange readings in this star system that didn't seem to match up with any of our readings from previous exploration missions."
The First Officer paused for a moment as he gathered his strength. Then he continued his story, "We sent out two shuttles to investigate the readings while we situated ourselves in orbit around this planet here," He said pointing at something on one of the monitor screens behind him, "As soon as our shuttles touched down we knew something wasn't right."
The First Officer coughed loudly in between sentences and then continued speaking again after he had regained his breath once more, "When our shuttles landed they were attacked immediately by these strange tentacled creatures which snuck up on them while they were still on board their shuttles."
"Did you have any casualties?" I asked him.
"Yes," The First Officer replied at me solemnly, "Of our crew of seventy-five only forty survived including those who were on board with me here on this shuttle." My heart sank deeply at hearing this news, but I remained silent and let the First Officer continue with his story without interrupting him further.
"We tried to fight back against these creatures from within our shuttles but it seemed like we were severely outnumbered by them," He said in a soft voice that was growing weaker by the moment, "Most of us who got out of our shuttles did so too late to be able to make it back inside without sustaining severe injuries or even death."
After the First Officers long pause for breath I asked him another question about what happened next.
"What did you do then?" I asked him nervously as I watched him shiver violently in his seat trying desperately not to die just yet although it seemed like time was running out fast for both of us now as well as every other life form on board that doomed vessel above us now.
"We all retreated back towards where the shuttle had landed," The First Officer replied at me weakly but with great determination still shining through in spite of his obvious condition and imminent demise. "We managed to construct this temporary shelter, but our resources are dwindling, and we have found no path to escape this planet."
Throughout the conversation, the First Officer's condition continued to deteriorate, his speech growing weaker and more pained with each passing moment. I recognized the urgency of the situation and the need to find help for the surviving crew members, myself included, while there was still time left.
But as I glanced around the shuttle's dim interior, marked by the painful memories of those who had perished during this harrowing journey, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of despair. My heart mourned our immense losses, and my mind raced to find a way to navigate through this seemingly insurmountable challenge. Would anyone ever discover our whereabouts? Could we overcome these alien creatures and find the means to return home safely? Or would we be yet another forgotten casualty of the unforgiving expanse of space?
As I pondered these troubling questions, I knew one thing for certain: I cannot, and I will not,
