Pirate's Vow
·
Published 8/4/2023When Captain Natalia Romano's crew stumbles upon an ancient map leading to a fabled treasure, she must outwit a ruthless rival pirate in a high-stakes race against time to claim the riches and secure her legacy as the fiercest pirate in the Mediterranean.

The waves lap against the side of the ship and the wind rustles my hair. The moon is so bright tonight, I can see the outlines of the other ships in the cove. Most are docked for the night.
Our sail was down on our last raid, so we had to dock here for a few days to fix it. Not that anybody here would notice. We've been ghosting around these waters for months now, stealing from traders and coastal towns and disappearing without a trace.
At least, that's what I tell myself.
I can't shake the feeling that we've been losing ground. We haven't taken any of the really big prizes lately. Our last big haul was an entire trading fleet, but that was almost three months ago. Since then, just some ships passing through and a few coastal villages with barely anything worth taking.
We need something big and soon or... I don't know what will happen? People have started whispering in my ear at night when they think I can't hear them. They're talking about moving on, finding a new captain if nothing changes soon. That's ridiculous, of course; nobody wants to sail under a woman as captain, but I'm fighting tooth and nail to keep them loyal no matter what happens.
"Natalia." My first mate, Marcus, stood next to me on the side of the ship looking out at the sea with me. "We need..." He trailed off with a sigh before he turned his head up to look at me. "We need to do something soon," he said simply. He didn't need to say anything else; we both knew what he meant by that statement.
I nodded slowly in agreement before turning back towards the cove and staring into it's dark waters below us. It was quiet there in the cove, not even any animals trying to get above water to catch a breeze while they slept.
The silence felt oppressive all of a sudden as I realized how alone we actually were here with no one around to hear us if things went sideways between us two seconds from now. Marcus wasn't someone I could trust yet; he'd only been with me for about three months after all and most people would probably say that I'm still just using him as muscle for my bigger plans anyways so... yeah, that's probably not the best idea right now.
"You're right," I said finally after a moment spent looking at him instead of into the cove itself which was probably safer anyways since there was plenty of room down there for pirates to hide instead of being out on deck where they could be seen by everyone if they wanted to be seen like this late at night when they thought they wouldn't be seen by anyone as they did their dirty work anyways because nobody ever suspects pirates of doing sneaky things like this because such acts are beneath them is what people say so yeah maybe this might end up being a bad idea after all who knows anymore? "Let's get back home."

Three days later found me standing on my quarterdeck staring down at our prize: The 'Venus' - A massive galleon captured just outside our usual hunting grounds near Sicily with more than half her crew missing along with her captain who had been taken prisoner by my men earlier today when he tried to sneak aboard my ship during port call looking for his prized gem collection which had been stolen from his ship after it had been raided earlier this month when we were nowhere near this area so yeah I guess you could say it was quite an impressive haul indeed!
*
People were beginning to whisper in my ear again this time though not about dumping me as their leader but about how amazing my accomplishments were! Maybe I'd found my mojo again! Maybe everything would be okay! Maybe.... Maybe... Hmm... No wait! What am I thinking?! This is incredible news! This is exactly what we've needed all this time! This haul is going to set us up nicely for years to come!
But as the initial excitement wore off, a nagging thought began to gnaw at the edges of my mind. The ease with which we had taken the 'Venus' raised a troubling question: Where were all the crew members? It seemed highly unlikely that they could have all been killed or captured in our raid. Perhaps there was something more sinister at play here, something that hadn't crossed my mind until now.
I called Marcus to my side, his face filled with a mix of pride and curiosity. "Do you think it's odd, Marcus?" I asked, my voice low and cautious.
He furrowed his brow, contemplating my words. "Now that you mention it, Captain, it is rather strange. A ship of this size should have had many more crew members aboard, yet they were conspicuously absent."
"Exactly," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "What if this ship is cursed, Marcus? What if we've stumbled upon a vessel that carries a dark secret?"
Marcus blinked in surprise, clearly taken aback by my sudden suspicion. "Captain, superstitions and curses have no place in a pirate's life. We make our own luck, remember?"
"True," I conceded, "but we've seen strange things before, haven't we? Unexplainable occurrences that we couldn't attribute to mere coincidence."
He nodded slowly, the lines on his face deepening with concern. "I suppose you're right, Captain. But what do you suggest we do then? Abandon the ship and its spoils?"
I chewed on my lower lip, wrestling with my own trepidation. Despite the fear coursing through my veins, my curiosity and ambition urged me forward. "No, Marcus. We'll keep the treasure, but we'll also investigate this ship thoroughly. We need to uncover the truth behind its mysterious emptiness."
With renewed determination, we set about exploring every nook and cranny of the 'Venus'. As we delved deeper into its labyrinthine passages, a sense of unease settled upon us. The silence within the ship was almost palpable, broken only by the faint creaking of wood and the distant lapping of waves against the hull.
Room after room, deck after deck, we found nothing but an eerie emptiness. The beds were neatly made, personal belongings were left untouched, and the food in the pantry was still fresh. It was as if the crew had simply vanished into thin air, leaving no trace of their existence.
Finally, we reached the captain's quarters. The door creaked open with a sense of foreboding, revealing a lavish room adorned with fine furniture and opulent decorations. But where was the captain? A cold shiver ran down my spine as I noticed a faint glimmer of light emanating from behind a heavy wooden desk.
Carefully, I approached the desk and pulled aside an old, tattered map. Buried beneath it was a small, ornate box. I opened it with trembling hands, and my breath caught in my throat. Nestled inside was the captain's prized gem collection, as Marcus had mentioned earlier.
But there was something else. A folded piece of parchment, its corners yellowed with age. I unfolded it and read the words scrawled across its surface. It was a half-finished journal entry penned by the ship's previous captain, detailing his descent into madness, his suspicions of a malevolent force lurking within the ship's confines.
The entry spoke of strange occurrences, crew members disappearing without a trace, and a pervasive sense of darkness that permeated the 'Venus'. The captain had become convinced that the ship itself was cursed, haunted by vengeful spirits seeking retribution for the atrocities committed in its name.
I closed my eyes, my mind spinning with the weight of the revelation. The 'Venus' was indeed cursed, and we had unwittingly become entangled in its web of darkness. But instead of fear, a strange determination stirred within me. I would not let this curse dictate our fate.
"Marcus," I said, my voice filled with newfound resolve. "We will return to our ship. We will leave the 'Venus' behind, but not without taking what we've come for. We'll gather the treasure, and then we'll torch this ship, freeing it from its curse once and for all."
Marcus nodded, his face a mixture of concern and admiration. "A bold move, Captain, but one that must be done."
As we made our way back to our own ship, the weight of the curse seemed to grow heavier with each step. But I refused to let it consume me. We would overcome this darkness, and our victory would shine brighter than any stolen gem. The 'Venus' would be the chapter in our story that tested our mettle, but ultimately propelled us forward, stronger and more resilient than ever before.
And so, as the flames engulfed the 'Venus', consuming its cursed past, we sailed away, leaving behind the whispers of the vanquished spirits. The tale of our encounter with the haunted ship would become the stuff of legend, whispered among pirates in now hushed reverence. The crew would look to me as a captain who defied fate itself and emerged victorious.
Little did they know, however, that our journey had only just begun. The wealth from the 'Venus' would attract new adversaries and temptations. But armed with the knowledge that we could overcome even the darkest of curses, I embraced the uncertain future with a spark of excitement in my eyes. For pirates like us, the allure of the unknown was a siren's call we couldn't resist. And with every trial we faced, our legacy as the fearless crew of the cursed 'Venus' would only grow stronger.
