Hyo and the Sphinx
·
Published 4/26/2023When an eccentric and daring young man, Hyo, embarks on a mission to entice a mysterious sphinx out of hiding, he faces some unexpected, and ultimately fatal consequences in pursuit of the Korean folklore legend.

The sun was high in the sky, and the birds were chirping. The cool breeze from the mountains carried a faint hint of pine. All was peaceful.
That is, until a young man named Hyo came charging down the path, waving his arms and howling like a madman. Ordinarily, this would be nothing out of the ordinary. Hyo was known to be eccentric, but not insane. No one really knew what he was up to today, but they didn’t really care either. Their peace was shattered with his arrival and they would just let him do whatever he wanted today.
After a few minutes of sprinting and stomping around like an elephant, Hyo stopped and looked around at the village. Then he closed his eyes and tilted his head to the side, as if listening for something. Then he opened them again and pointed at a nearby tree. “There it is!” He shouted to himself. “The sphinx!” And with that, he ran towards the tree so fast that he almost tripped over a rock along the way.
The villagers looked at each other quizzically, wondering if an actual sphinx had somehow made its way into the middle of their village or if this was just another one of Hyo’s pranks. But before they could come to any conclusions about what was going on, they heard a terrifying roar from inside the tree and then… silence. The villagers waited for a second, expecting some kind of reaction from Hyo, but there was no response at all. They started getting worried and began walking towards where Hyo had gone into the tree only to find… nothing? There was no blood on the ground or anything that would indicate that something had happened here just now. Confused and concerned, they looked up at the tree in search of answers and saw that there were two small holes bored into it by sharp teeth (or claws) that had managed to cut through all of their thick leaves without any sound whatsoever! They stared at each other in shock as they finally realized what had happened: The sphinx had eaten Hyo!
They quickly left the village to inform everyone else about this terrible incident and warn them against going near any trees from now on. Of course, nobody took them seriously until just a few days later when another man rushed into town screaming about being chased by a monster along with loud chirping noises. The villagers were confused by this turn of events too as there were no insects anywhere near this man who suddenly appeared out of nowhere before passing out on the ground in front of them while holding onto his sides like there were bees stinging him everywhere at once! When they went to check it out themselves, they found a massive hive hidden behind one of their houses which explained everything! As punishment for eating one of their own (and scaring another off), they decided that it would be best to burn down or chop down any trees with large holes bored into them for good measure for their protection after all!
