Anna was happy. She was finally free. Free from the oppressive weight of her husband's hand on her shoulders as he forced her to walk. Free from his sharp words that cut like razors into her psyche. Free from being expected to be the little woman, the mother and housewife. She was happy for the first time in years. Yes, she missed her children. But...she had left them with a very capable woman. She would be fine, Anna reasoned with herself as she walked along the dusty road to freedom. Maybe some day they will find me again! Maybe I will even find them! Or maybe they are dead or something! But it doesn't matter! Because now I am free! I am free to do what I want! And right now what I want is to get out of these clothes and feel the sun on my skin!
She glanced at her companion walking beside her, a young man by the name of Karl. He was handsome, if one liked that sort of thing (Anna certainly did) with light eyes and hair as golden as an angel's halo. He had a smile like sunshine, soft and warm and full of joy. He turned his gaze to meet hers and smiled back at her with such love in his eyes that she could not help but return it with a blush and a giggle. They had met only hours before; Anna had taken up residence in a small inn for travelers to eat lunch in when he walked into the tavern, looking both lost and hungry. He sat down next to her and started talking about this strange town he had found himself in (Sprechen? Never heard of it) and how he needed to leave, but didn't have any money for travel expenses. In fact, all he did have was a pack full of books he'd brought with him wherever he went because he wasn't ready to part with them yet. On impulse, Anna offered him money if he would help her escape from town. He agreed readily, spending their whole meal discussing ways they could flee Sprechen without Samuel realizing they were gone until they finally decided to just go outside once everyone had fallen asleep and disappear into the night under cover of darkness.
