A Dog and His Scientist: Unveiling a Village's Future
·
Published 2/1/2023In ancient India, a courageous scientist and his loyal pet dog embark on a daring adventure, full of danger and surprises, as they strive to uncover a daring truth that could revolutionize their culture-rich village, as conflict and opposing forces set the stakes ever higher.
The sun was a scarlet ball of fire, sinking slowly into the horizon, bathing the village in a warm glow. The evening breeze was cool, but not cold; it was peaceful and quiet, but not silent. The sounds of the villagers enjoying their evening surrounded me as I walked through the streets of the village on my way home from the lab.
My name is Dr. Darshan, and I am the top scientist in this village. My research has earned me the respect of the elders and the adoration of the children. I am single-handedly responsible for the village's success, and I am well paid for my services. That being said, I am not idle. Every evening I walk the streets of the lab and the village, meeting with the people and businesses that make up the village. I know all of them by name, and they all know me. I am the one who keeps them safe, who keeps their crops growing, their water flowing and their power running. Their safety and happiness are my responsibility, and I take that responsibility very seriously.
As I walked home, I heard the sound of dogs barking. This was an unusual sound; dogs were generally quiet, and never barked. There were only two dogs in the village, and they were both mine. My pet dog, Coco, was always quiet and gentle, but I had never seen him behave aggressively toward another animal. But tonight, I could hear him barking, and he seemed to be threatening someone.
I turned down the street where I lived, and was shocked to see three men standing in front of my house. Two of them were dressed in black suits and red ties, and carried strange weapons that glowed orange when they were fired. These were members of the Red Army, a group of soldiers who had come to the village several days ago and demanded that they surrender. They said that they were at war with the Blue Army, and that we would either join them or be destroyed. The villagers had refused, and now I knew why.
The third man was dressed in blue, and wore an angry scowl on his face. He was pointing a weapon at Coco, clearly agitated by my dog's barking. Had Coco attacked these men? I couldn't let that happen!
"What do you want here, Blue?" I shouted, stepping forward and placing myself between the Blue soldier and my dog.
The Blue soldier stopped pointing his weapon at Coco, but didn't lower it. "I'm here to kill your dog." His voice was sharp, almost angry. "It attacked one of my men, and now we have to find out why."
"It's probably just protective of its master." I said, looking the Blue soldier in the eye. "You're not welcome here, Blue. You need to leave immediately."
"I will not leave until I kill your dog." The Blue soldier responded defiantly. "You should've joined our side, Yellow. You would be safer."
"No." I said flatly. "We don't want to be part of your war. We don't want to fight, we just want to live our lives peacefully."
"You're a coward!" The Blue soldier yelled. "You should join us!"
"I don't care what you think!" I snapped back. "Now get out of here, or I'll call the police!"
"I am the police." The Blue soldier said menacingly. "I'm going to kill your dog, and then I'm going to kill you. I hope your family doesn't suffer too much over your death."
"Do whatever you want." I said, turning my back to the Blue soldier and walking to my door. I felt the Blue soldier's eyes following me as I opened the door and walked inside, but I did not look back. My dog followed behind me, but Coco stopped short of the threshold. He growled deeply at the Blue soldier, baring his teeth and raising his hackles high. I looked at my dog, surprised. This was not like him.
"Coco, go inside." I said softly, but Coco ignored me. He stood his ground, staring down the Blue soldier. I walked back outside, and picked up Coco, bringing him inside. He struggled in my arms, but I was stronger than him, and soon he was in the house, looking back toward the door. He continued to growl, and I could tell that he was keeping his eye on the Blue soldier. Was Coco protecting me from the Blue soldier?
I watched as the Blue soldier walked away, back toward the forest, and I locked the door behind me. I could hear the other two Red soldiers talking to each other, and I listened quietly as they retreated back into the forest. What were they planning? Were they here to attack the villagers? I had to let the villagers know!
I ran to the center of the village, and called a meeting of the elders. It was time to gather the villagers. We would have to protect ourselves if the Red Army attacks.
