Two Shall Persevere: Sia and Anoriti's Epic Journey
·
Published 6/9/2023Against all odds, two brave and witty children, Sia and Anoriti, embark on an epic journey through the wilds of 5th century Sub-Saharan Africa to discover an unexpected unity and ultimately unlock the power of perseverance.

Sia and Anoriti were a pair of best friends who loved to be outside. They played a lot of games, but their favorite was hide-and-seek. It was just the two of them against the world: they would see who could go the longest without being caught.
One day, Sia came up with an idea. "Let's play a game in the jungle," he said. He was excited to show off his knowledge of the trees and rocks near his home. The two ran through the woods toward the one place Sia considered secret: a perfect spot for hide-and-seek, right under the shadow of a massive tree that seemed to reach all the way to the sky.
"This is my spot," Sia said, "It can't be beat." His pride swelled when Anoriti didn't immediately agree; he'd obviously chosen well.
But as Sia began counting, Anoriti suddenly appeared beside him. "How did you find me so fast!" Sia cried. "I barely even started!"
"It's easy," Anoriti laughed, "You made a lot of noise running here."
Sia thought about it for a moment, then realized she'd been making too much noise herself. She hadn't wanted to wait for her friend, but now she knew why she should have been quiet. Sia smiled at her friend and hugged her. "We're going to be good partners today."
The pair continued through the forest until they heard an odd noise ahead of them. They saw something move - something big - but it didn't sound like any animal they knew of in this part of the forest.
They decided to investigate, following their curiosity deeper into the jungle until they came across what looked like a small house covered with leaves. They had never seen anything like it before - it was clearly manmade, but nothing they had come across before in their village or in their travels through the forest with their parents. The pair cautiously approached it together and peered inside through a window that had been left open. To their surprise, they saw another child there! He looked just like them, but he wore different clothes than anyone they'd ever seen in Africa before - not just different colors, but different patterns and designs as well.
From what they could see of his skin underneath his clothes, he wasn't black like them or white like most of the people in Europe who sometimes passed through their village on boats and ships that had sailed down from across an ocean they could only imagine; this boy was brown like both of them! But there was no time for introductions: suddenly, Sia noticed some movement out of their corner of vision and grabbed Anoriti's arm to pull her out from around the side of the strange house as fast as she could run! As soon as they were firmly back behind the relative safety of their trees again, she whispered urgently to her friend: "We have to get away from here - we don't know who that boy is or what he'll do if he finds us watching his house!"
Taking heed of Sia's warning, the two friends made their way back to the familiar landscapes of their village, leaving the mysteries of the jungle and the unknown boy behind them. As much as they wanted to explore further, they knew it was best to stay safe and maintain their wise and cautious reputation as young adventurers. Upon returning to their families, they recounted their tale without revealing the strange dwelling they had discovered, knowing it was a secret they would forever keep between themselves. Never forgetting the brown-skinned youth or the peculiar house hidden within the depths of the jungle, Sia and Anoriti's curiosity persisted, fueling their imaginations and youthful desire for exploration. The memory served as a lesson they would carry throughout their lives - that the vast world was full of myriad wonders and mysteries waiting to be unravelled.
