Cosmic Echo
·
Published 7/27/2023In a distant kingdom, a team of explorers discover a mysterious structure on a distant planet's moon, and with the aid of an enchanted staff, they must navigate uncharted and bizarre forces to reach an ancient being who holds the key to restoring balance to the cosmos, but their courageous decision comes with a cost only they can determine.

Chatterton was the first to break into the open. He was cautious, of course, even if he did have magic to help him. The others followed closely behind, but they left their packs and equipment outside. The air was cool in here, but not unpleasant. It smelled old, like a library full of books that hadn’t been opened in years. Maybe more than years…centuries?
Carlisle looked around, his eyes glinting with eagerness. “Let’s find some artifacts!” he said.
“I don’t think we need to. We should just focus on finding the source of the energy for our ship,” Chatterton replied. “We can look for artifacts later.”
“But your mother encouraged us to find artifacts! She said we might learn something from them! And I want to know what this place is! What are these columns anyway? They are very unusual looking,” Carlisle said. He began walking down the hall, grabbing his pack and putting it on as he went.
Chatterton sighed and followed him reluctantly. “They could be designed to hold up this building somehow…or maybe they are supports for more floors above us? I think we should get out of here before it gets too dark and we can’t see anymore. We can go exploring again once we have enough light inside the ship.”
But Carlisle had already found something interesting at the end of the hall where it turned a corner and led off into another room. “Look at this! The floor is made out of metal! This must be an ancient civilization or something! You should get a sample for your mother!”
Chatterton looked at the floor and shrugged. “It doesn’t seem all that special…but sure I suppose I could take a sample back home if you want me to do that…but let’s keep moving on now before it gets too dark in here to see anything else…that could be dangerous if we need light later on in here and don’t have any…especially since we don’t know if there are any dangerous creatures in here or not! I don’t want to have to sleep in here tonight if there are dangerous creatures around! That would be bad! And we don’t even know what time it is right now exactly so who knows when it will get dark here? Let’s keep moving along now…we can explore more tomorrow morning once there is enough light inside the ship for us to see better again then…so let’s keep moving along now! Shall we? Good idea, yes? Yes! Let us get back outside…yes!!! Right away!!! Let us hurry!!! Hurry!!! Let us leave this place now!!! Yes!!! Now!!! Hurry!!! Hurry!!!"
Carlisle picked up the piece of metal from where it was lying on the ground and put it in his bag along with some dirt from beneath his boots. He ran after Chatterton with his bag bouncing up and down when he ran through the hallway towards the exit into daylight.
As Chatterton and Carlisle hurriedly made their way towards the exit, Chatterton couldn't help but feel a growing unease. The weight of the ancient structure seemed to press down upon him, filling him with a sense of foreboding that he couldn't quite shake off. He quickened his pace, Carlisle following close behind, the bag slung over his shoulder now, holding tightly onto the sample of metal they had found.
Just as they were about to reach the exit, a low rumble echoed through the corridors, causing Chatterton to stumble. He steadied himself against the cool stone wall, his heart racing in his chest. The rumble intensified, vibrating through the very foundations of the place. Dust fell from the cracks in the ceiling, dancing in the light that filtered through the narrow windows.
"What's happening?" Carlisle exclaimed, his voice filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation.
Chatterton glanced around, his mind racing to find an explanation. "I don't know," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "But we need to get out of here, now!"
They pushed themselves forward, their footsteps echoing in the vast emptiness around them, as the sound of the rumble grew louder still. Panic welled up inside Chatterton, his imagination conjuring images of the walls collapsing, trapping them inside this ancient prison forever.
Finally, they reached the exit, bursting through the heavy wooden doors into the blinding daylight. The abrupt change in atmosphere left them momentarily disoriented, their eyes struggling to adjust to the brightness. As they stood there in the open, Chatterton stole a glance back at the imposing structure they had just escaped from.
To his horror, he watched as the ground beneath it began to tremble. The ancient columns started to shake, groaning under the unseen weight that threatened to tear the entire place apart. Chatterton felt a surge of adrenaline, urging him to run as far away as possible.
"Carlisle, we have to move!" he shouted, grabbing his friend's arm and pulling him along. They sprinted across the field, their bodies propelled by sheer fear. Behind them, the cataclysmic collapse of the ancient structure sent a shockwave through the air, like a ripple in a pond.
As they reached the safety of the open field, the sound of destruction abated, leaving only a deafening stillness in its wake. Chatterton and Carlisle stumbled to a stop, panting heavily, their eyes locked on the remnants of the once-majestic building.
"What just happened?" Carlisle asked, his voice filled with awe and disbelief.
Chatterton's heart pounded in his chest as he tried to process what he had witnessed. "I don't know," he whispered. "But one thing is for certain: this place is far more dangerous than we ever imagined."
The weight of their discovery settled upon them, overshadowing their initial excitement. What they had dismissed as a mere archaeological expedition now revealed itself to be a treacherous journey into the unknown. The remnants of the collapsed structure seemed to taunt them, whispering secrets that would now remain hidden forever.
As they turned to leave, determination set in their eyes. They would heed Chatterton's initial warning and focus solely on finding the source of the energy for their ship. The artifacts could wait, for there was much more at stake now.
