I sighed and slunk down in my chair with my head down on my desk again. This wasn't going well at all--it wouldn't work out if nobody wanted anything except for somebody else who didn't want anything from anyone at all. I felt like I was perpetually waiting, always expecting someone to reach out, but that moment never seemed to come.

Suddenly, somebody tapped on my shoulder lightly, causing me jump out of my chair with surprise. After taking a few seconds to collect myself after being startled like that by someone touching me unexpectedly, I turned around only slightly so that whoever it was could still see my face but couldn't see my eyes which were hidden behind thick-rimmed glasses--I hoped that this little bit of caution would protect me somehow if this person was going to hurt me (or worse) suddenly in light of recent events.

"Um...hi," said someone standing beside my desk timidly as others began filing into the classroom one by one until all seats were filled except for mine and one other empty chair next to me where this person stood nervously shifting his weight from foot to foot while looking around cautiously.

"My name's Jacob," I said quietly after clearing my throat which made him jump a little. "Are you new?" He asked hesitantly after composing himself again. His hair was dark brown with lighter blonde highlights streaked throughout--his eyebrows matched his hair color but were lighter too--and his eyes were blue as far as I could tell under all those weird colored contacts he wore.

"I'm moving here today," I replied, finally managing a smile despite feeling exhausted from all the emotional ups and downs I'd experienced recently.

He smiled back shyly as though he was trying not to appear friendly but found himself unable not to be compassionate. "Oh really?" he asked curiously with soft eyes full of wonderment. "Yeah," I said nodding.
