Dueling Paths of Two Headed Teens
·
Published 1/28/2023In a mythic world wrought with conflict, two extraordinary teens with one shared destiny face off against cruel societal norms as they fight to be accepted and find peace -- each with a headstrong mission of their own.
"My name is Echo. I'm a demigod. My mother was a nymph and my father, who is no longer with us, was the king of the gods."
"And what does that make me?"
"It makes you an illegitimate child, who doesn't exist except to fulfill my prophecy."
"That's great and all, but why did you run away from home?"
"I..."
Echo faltered. There wasn't any reason for why she ran away from home. She had nothing to run away from. She was being chased by a demon, that's all. All she wanted was to get out of it's way, but it seemed like she had to run all the way to Germany just to escape.
"I'm scared of demons."
"And that's why you ran away? Aren't you supposed to be powerful?"
"I am, but I don't want to be. I don't want to be a messiah. I just want to live my life in peace."
"Peace? You mean like the peace where we have to bow down to a bunch of old men? The peace where we can't even challenge society's norms?"
"Not everyone wants to do that."
"But if we don't, then history repeats itself! We keep bowing down to people who are supposed to lead us, but instead, they lead us to our doom. They're the same people who started World War 2, and they're the same people who started World War 1. People have to stand up for themselves."
"But people are only hurting themselves when they rebel! Look at the French Revolution! It was a bloody mess! If people aren't happy with the way things are, then they should vote for better people!"
"And who are these better people?"
"The ones who are smart enough to listen to the needs of the people, and who are willing to change society for the better."
"What makes you think that they'll listen to us? They'll just treat us like the peasants we are and ignore us. It's not like they care about us. The last thing they need is more work. We're just workers, cattle, sheep. We're there to be used until we die."
"There are people fighting for us! They want to make the world a better place! If we don't fight for them, then who will?"
"They're the same people who gave us the Holocaust, and a thousand other genocides. Are you going to tell me that they're different this time?"
"No."
"Then what's the point? Why don't we just give up, and let them use us for their own purposes?"
"Because... because if we give up, then what does that say about us? That we're cowards? That we're weak?"
"I don't know. Maybe."
"So what are you going to do?"
"I'm going to start a new empire, one where all people are treated fairly. And you're going to help me."
"Why would I do that?"
"Because I'm going to free you from your prophecy."
"You're going to kill me?"
"No, I'm going to kill everyone else."
Echo tried to run away, but it was too late. The demon had already grabbed her.
"Now, let me tell you about my plan for the New Order."
"Hey, what are you doing here? I thought that the military didn't allow civilians on base."
"I'm not a civilian."
"You don't look like a soldier. I'm gonna have to ask you to leave."
"What did you say? I'm a demigod. A fucking demigod."
"A demigod? What the hell is a demigod?"
"I'm a half-god, half-human hybrid. I was born in the Greek Empire, but I was exiled because I attracted the attention of some bad guys."
"What bad guys?"
"The same bad guys who started World War 2, and the same ones who started World War 1."
"Are you serious? Those guys are gone now. There are no more Nazis, no more Communists, no more Republicans or Democrats. We have a New Order. We're a new society."
"How do you know that? How do you know that we're not just being led by the same old people?"
"Because I've seen them. They're not the same people anymore."
"Then how do you know that they're not the same people?"
"Because the ones I saw were all women! We're a matriarchy now. We're the first society to not be led by men!"
"So what? That doesn't mean anything. Maybe they're just pretending to be women so they can trick everyone into thinking that we're in a matriarchy. Maybe they're not really women. Maybe they're just men in dresses."
"Do you really think that we'd fall for that? That we'd be that stupid?"
"I don't know. I don't know anything anymore."
"I'm starting to not know anything either. I can't figure out who the real enemies are anymore. Are they the Communists, the Republicans, or the Democrats? I don't know. I don't know anything anymore."
