"Are you sure this is the place?" asked Alex, peering down into the dark hole.

"It's definitely where the signal's coming from," replied Mia, holding up her handheld scanner. The screen displayed a blinking dot on a map of the area.

The group of survivors had been hiking through the wasteland for days, searching for any signs of civilization. It seemed like they were the only ones left in this desolate world. But then they stumbled upon the underground facility, hidden beneath layers of dirt and rubble.

"What do you think could be down there?" asked Jake, shining his flashlight into the hole.

"No idea," said Mia, "But whatever it is, it's still powered on. And that means there might be supplies we can use."

"Let's check it out," said Alex, climbing down into the hole. The others followed suit, descending into darkness.

As they reached the bottom and turned on their flashlights, they found themselves standing in a long corridor lined with metal doors.

"Where do we even start?" asked Sarah.

"We follow the signal," replied Mia, leading them down the corridor. They came to a door at the end labeled "Control Room." Mia pushed it open and stepped inside.

The room was filled with computer monitors and blinking lights. In the center stood a large console with a glass dome on top. Inside was a small orb emitting a soft blue glow.

"What is that thing?" asked Jake.

"I'm not sure," said Mia as she approached the console. She pressed a few buttons and one of the monitors flickered to life. A message appeared on screen: "Welcome to Tempus Facility - Time Manipulation and Spatial Displacement AI."

"Time manipulation?" whispered Sarah. "Do you think that means...?"

"That we can go back in time and stop all this from happening?" finished Alex.

Mia nodded slowly. "It looks that way. But we need to be careful. Time travel comes with its own set of risks and consequences."

The group fell silent, contemplating the possibilities. They had lost so much in the apocalypse - friends, family, their entire way of life. The chance to change it all was both exciting and terrifying.

"What do we do?" asked Jake.

Mia took a deep breath. "We need to gather more information. Find out if this AI is capable of altering the past without causing further damage."

They spent hours examining the console and reading through the facility's logs. It seemed that the AI had been designed as a last-ditch effort to save humanity from its own destruction. It could send them back in time, but only once, and any changes they made would have unknown consequences for the future.

"This is a lot to take in," said Sarah, rubbing her temples.

"I know," replied Mia, "But we have to decide what to do next."

The group gathered around the console, their faces illuminated by its soft blue glow.

"We can't just ignore this opportunity," said Alex. "Think about all the lives we could save."

"But what if we make things worse?" asked Jake. "What if our actions here are what caused the apocalypse in the first place?"

"We don't know for sure," said Mia. "But I think it's worth the risk."

The others looked at her, their expressions a mix of hope and fear.

"Alright," said Sarah finally. "Let's do it."

Mia nodded and began typing commands into the console. The glass dome on top slid open and the small orb inside floated up into the air.

A voice echoed through the room, soft yet commanding: "Are you sure you wish to proceed?"

"Yes," replied Mia firmly.

"Very well," said the voice as a bright light enveloped them all.

When they opened their eyes again, they found themselves standing in the middle of a bustling city street. People hurried past them, completely oblivious to their presence.

"We did it," whispered Jake, his voice filled with awe.

Mia smiled, but her expression quickly turned serious. "Now we need to figure out what to do next."

They had no plan, no idea where or when they were. They would have to start from scratch and find a way to prevent the catastrophic events that led to the world's downfall.

As they navigated the crowded streets, trying not to draw attention to themselves, they couldn't help but wonder: What other dangers and ethical dilemmas lay ahead? And how would altering the past affect their own lives and identities?

Only time would tell.
