Why AI dialogue scenes usually feel wrong
Watch an AI-generated conversation from most tools and something feels off, even if every clip looks great: the room changes between angles, characters swap sides of the frame, eyelines don't meet. Your brain reads it instantly as broken space.
Film solved this a century ago with two ideas:
- Coverage — a scene isn't one shot. It's an establishing WIDE, an over-the-shoulder (OTS) pair for dialogue, and close-ups (MCU/CU) for emphasis, all cut together.
- The 180° rule — draw an imaginary line between two characters. Keep the camera on one side of it, and character A stays screen-left, B stays screen-right, in every shot. Cross it and the scene falls apart.
Text prompts can't hold either of these. Images can.
How the storyboard holds the line
The Storyboard phase composes every shot as a still, in shot order, and each new angle is composed from the previous locked angle plus the canon references:
- The scene's WIDE establishes the geography — who's where, what the room looks like.
- OTS #1 is composed from that wide: same room, camera behind character A.
- OTS #2 — the reverse — is composed from OTS #1. The model sees the first angle and composes its companion, keeping the same space and the same side of the line.
- MCU/CUs chain down from the OTS pair.
This is Kimeric's insight and classic set discipline: the reverse angle is composed from the locked first angle, so continuity is held by reference, not luck.
The most important frames in your film
The OTS pair is load-bearing. Close-ups chain off it; the whole scene's sense of space depends on it. So when you're reviewing storyboard frames:
- Do the eyelines meet? A should be looking screen-right, B screen-left (or vice versa) — consistently.
- Is it the same room? Same window, same lamp, same wall behind each character across the pair.
- Fix it ruthlessly here. A frame costs 1 credit. If either OTS frame feels like a different location, recompose it before generating anything downstream — every chained frame inherits its composition.
Working the storyboard
- Compose all frames runs the whole show in order (order matters — chaining needs earlier frames first).
- Grid shows every frame at once; flip to Focus to work one frame at a time with a filmstrip of the whole board.
- Recompose any frame that misses. Because it re-chains from the locked neighbors, fixing frame 4 doesn't break frame 3.
- Touch up instead when a frame is almost right — click it, describe the one thing to change ("fix her hair, match shot 1's grain"), optionally add a look reference, and only that detail changes. Every version is kept in the frame's variations strip, so you can flip back.
- Lock frame approves it. The video model will animate exactly this image.
- Going straight to Ready to generate videos without composing frames is allowed — the system composes a keyframe inline at video time. Fine for montages and single-character shots; a false economy for dialogue scenes.
Exercise
Start The Last Transmission below and take the control-room scene through the storyboard:
- Compose the WIDE. Note where Mara sits and where the door is.
- Compose the OTS pair. Check both frames against the wide: same console wall? Door on the same side?
- Deliberately recompose OTS #2 once with an edited prompt ("lower angle, closer") — notice it still holds the room.
- Lock the pair, compose the close-ups, and watch them inherit the space.
