The Web Weavers: A Spider-Person's Quest
·
Published 11/28/2023Gwen Stacy swung through the familiar streets of Brooklyn, her heart pounding in her chest. She had to find Miles. He was missing, lost somewhere in his own home dimension, and she was determined to bring him back.
As she landed on a rooftop, Gwen's spider-sense tingled, and she whipped around just in time to dodge a blast of energy. She looked down to see a figure dressed all in black, their face obscured by a mask.
"Who are you?" Gwen demanded.
The figure didn't respond, instead shooting another blast of energy at her. Gwen dodged again and shot out a web line, swinging down to deliver a kick that sent the figure sprawling.
"I said who are you?" Gwen repeated as she pinned the figure to the ground with webbing.
The figure struggled against their restraints but still didn't answer. Frustrated, Gwen reached up and pulled off the mask.
Her eyes widened as she recognized the face beneath it. It was Mary Jane Watson, but not the one from her own dimension. This MJ had short red hair and a fierce expression that matched the determination in her eyes.
"Let me go," MJ growled.
"Why were you attacking me?" Gwen asked, keeping her voice steady despite the shock coursing through her veins.
MJ glared at her but stayed silent. Gwen sighed and released some of the webbing holding MJ down, allowing her to sit up.
"I'm not your enemy," Gwen said firmly. "I don't know what's going on here, but we need to talk."
MJ scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest. "Talk? That's rich coming from you."
"What do you mean?"
"You're one of them," MJ said bitterly. "One of The Web Weavers."
Gwen frowned in confusion. "The Web Weavers? What are you talking about?"
MJ rolled her eyes. "Don't play dumb, Gwen Stacy. I know all about your little secret society. The group of powerful individuals from different universes who are secretly manipulating the events in each Spider-Person's canon timeline."
Gwen's mind raced as she tried to process what MJ was saying. "That's not true," she insisted. "I don't know anything about a secret society or manipulating timelines."
MJ raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Sure you don't. That's why you're here, right? Trying to reshape the multiverse according to your own desires?"
"No!" Gwen protested. "I'm here to find Miles and bring him back home."
MJ snorted derisively. "Yeah, right. Like I'm supposed to believe that."
Before Gwen could respond, another figure dropped down onto the rooftop beside them. It was another MJ, this one with long red hair and a more compassionate expression.
"Leave her alone, Gwen," Long-Haired MJ said gently.
Gwen looked at her in surprise. "You know me?"
Long-Haired MJ nodded and held out a hand to help Gwen up. "We're from different dimensions, but we've met before. Well, sort of."
Gwen took Long-Haired MJ's hand and let her pull her to her feet. "What do you mean 'sort of'?"
Long-Haired MJ sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "It's complicated. But right now, we need to focus on finding Miles and stopping The Web Weavers."
"But I don't even know who The Web Weavers are," Gwen protested.
Long-Haired MJ nodded sympathetically. "I know it's a lot to take in, but we'll explain everything once we find the others. There are more of us, you know - other Spider-People from different dimensions who can help us."
Gwen felt a flicker of hope ignite in her chest. "Really? How do we find them?"
Long-Haired MJ smiled. "I have an idea. But first, we need to get out of here before more of The Web Weavers show up."
Gwen nodded, and the three of them swung away into the night.
As they made their way through the city, Gwen couldn't help but wonder what other surprises awaited her on this journey. Little did she know that the shocking truths she was about to uncover would not only change her life but also the fate of the entire multiverse.
