"King Pelorus, please! I must speak with you!"
The King had been attempting to unwind in his chambers before retiring for the night. The old man's voice startled him and he nearly spilled his wine. As it was, a red stain began to spread across the tablecloth.
"Dalway? What is this about?" The King picked up a napkin and dabbed at the stain.
"I need to show you something." Dalway McAvoy, King Pelorus' chief of guards, stood at attention. "And I must do so alone."
The King frowned but motioned for his guards to withdraw to the hallway. He poured himself another glass of wine as McAvoy shut and locked the door behind them. The guard retrieved a small bundle from beneath his cloak; brown wrapping paper that had been folded and refolded dozens of times.
"What is it?"
McAvoy hesitated before speaking. "Please drink all the wine in your cup."
Pelorus eyed him suspiciously but did as requested. The guard watched intently as he drained the last drop and then handed over the package. The King eyed him wearily as he took it and opened it carefully with his fingernails. Inside were two black stones that shone as if wet with oil. His eyes widened when they revealed themselves to be two eggs - one blue, one green - both glowing slightly from within.
"Where did you get these?" Pelorus demanded angrily, jumping from his chair. He grabbed Dalway by the collar and shoved him violently against the wall.
"From a wretch who arrived today by boat," McAvoy replied calmly, ignoring the violence being inflicted on him. "He said he is a mage from far south but he has no license here." He shrugged casually and smiled as he regained his composure and straightened his clothing. "He even tried to sell me one of those damned eggs for five gold pieces each." He paused and shook his head sadly before continuing: "I told him I'd have him thrown in prison if he didn't leave town right away." He pointed to the eggs on the table between them, "I don't understand why he had such things on him though..."
