He stood there, staring at the gold. His eyes were wide from disbelief. He had never seen so much gold in his life. It was sitting on the ground in an open field, just waiting for him to take it and run far away from here with his life. But he couldn't do anything but stare.

He was seventeen now. That's how old he was when he watched that man die.

The guard had seen him first. The man who died after him had told him to run, and he did, even though the guard caught up to him quickly. It wasn't until later that the boy realized that he ran right into a group of guards, who grabbed him and held him down while one of them went through his pockets and took everything they could find. He had been lucky; they only pulled three coins out of his pocket before they left him alone.

That day changed his life forever. He wasn't sure how many days had passed since then, but he didn't think many more than a year, probably less than two years now that he thought about it. After the first few weeks of running from guards and sleeping in haystacks outside villages, he began to realize that he could no longer go back home. He knew the village would always be the same and everyone would still live there like nothing ever happened, but he would always be different because of what happened to him that night, and it made him scared to return home to where nothing has changed. Every time he thought about returning home, an image popped into his mind of the bloodstained grass near that man's body, and then the bloodstained ground near his own as well when they threw him down on the ground next to his dead friend.

So instead of going home, he lived on whatever food people offered him if they felt bad for him or if they saw him looking hungry or desperate enough in their village marketplaces or town squares. But as seasons came and went and months turned into years, fewer people wanted to help this dirty teenager begging for money everywhere he went . After a couple years of being homeless by choice or necessity, fewer people gave food to this dirty man asking people for money everywhere they went . After a couple more years of being homeless by choice or necessity , fewer people gave money to this dirty old man begging for food everywhere they went . And after more years passed still, nobody noticed this poor beggar walking around town with dust-covered clothes and an emaciated face as he begged for food anywhere he could find it as if begging hadn't been enough anymore . He didn't know why nobody offered to help him anymore, but maybe it was because they thought he had taken something from them before and now they were thinking about what they could take from him instead . No matter why nobody helped him anymore, it wasn't long before nobody else even noticed this homeless beggar walking around town anymore either .

And now here he was again: gazing at a mountain of gold sitting in an open field just waiting for anyone who found it to take it and run away before anyone else knew about it . A week ago two knights rode into town looking for someone rumored to have attacked them back in another city sixty miles away with a strange weapon that killed their horses without causing any wounds on its wielder himself . They questioned everyone about someone fitting his description before leaving town again without finding much success . But today one knight returned riding on horseback while another knight walked next to him carrying a bag full of gold coins on both shoulders as if carrying nothing more than a small sack of onions . They both looked at each other knowingly before nodding at each other like old friends greeting each other after too long apart . They kept looking at each other knowingly as they walked together past where the homeless beggar sat watching them curiously while eating some bread discarded by someone nearby . What are those two knights doing together? Who is walking behind who? Why are those two knights here together? How did those two knights meet in the first place? There were so many questions running through his head that he lost track of all except one: I wonder how much gold is in that bag?

It didn't take long for his curiosity to get the better of him this time; instead of watching the knights walk toward where the great open field lay between two hillsides far away in front of them , he turned around and stared at their backs as they disappeared over one hilltop while trying not to draw attention from them so they wouldn't see what was happening behind their backs when suddenly something unexpected happened: one knight turned around suddenly with fear written all over his face , shocked by what awaited them carrying a weapon never seen before not meant for killing men or animals but instead something much older than both animals and men written all over its surface in an ancient language only understood by those who understand these things! The other knight turned around too with surprise written all over his face , shocked by what awaited them carrying a weapon never seen before not meant for killing men or animals but instead something much older than both animals and men written all over its surface in an ancient language only understood by those who understand these things! The first knight gasped aloud "What is that!?" The second knight gasped aloud "Who is that?!" The first knight prepared himself with his sword drawn! The second knight prepared himself with a crossbow loaded! The first knight shouted "Who are you!? What are you doing out here!?" The second knight shouted "Give me back my bag!" The first knight asked "Where did you get this bag?" The second knight asked "Why don't you want me to have it?" The first knight demanded "Answer me!" The second knight demanded "Give me back my bag!" The first knight threatened "You will regret stealing this bag!" The second knight threatened "I will kill you if you don't give me back my bag!" There was no way either could let go now! Death raced towards both wielding weapons no living creature had ever wielded before against enemies no living creature had ever faced before! Everyone present froze watching two beings collide against each other knowing what happens next will decide their fate forever whether standing where everyone can see or hiding where nobody can see because nobody wants anything bad to happen where everyone can see ! Everyone stared at each other frozen shocked terrified wondering whether good or evil will triumph over which one has greater power written all over itself in an ancient language only understood by those who understand these things!
