Brightwatch Adventure: Ben and Lucy's Whimsical Journey
·
Published 5/27/2023Trying to find adventure in the peculiar and forgotten coastal town of Brightwatch, Ben and Lucy attempt to prove their wits and persevere through pulse-pounding danger while on the verge of rekindling their bond and learning of the delightful secrets the town holds.

The sky was dark, but with a light blue hue ringing the horizon line. The stars seemed to be more present than usual, and it was only when I looked down at my feet that I realized that I was standing on sand.
I wasn't sure why we were here in the first place. This had been Ben's idea, not mine. I just wanted to go out to dinner and enjoy some Christmas music. Just the two of us, like old times. But no, he wanted to find somebody else so he could try to get laid again.
We were walking along the beach now, and we had yet to meet anyone. There were lights in the distance and a sound of music playing somewhere inland, but for the most part we were alone on this stretch between the ocean and what looked like forest. We'd walked for about an hour now, but there had been no sign of other people - human people - at all. Only a few seabirds flying overhead occasionally, one of which had landed on Ben's shoulder for some reason before flying away again. Probably mistook him for a small rock or something.
I was beginning to think this was a bad idea after all. If Ben couldn't even get any action then what use would there be in trying?
"Are you sure this is Brightwatch?" I asked him at last. He'd brought me along because he claimed that there were people here who would know how to help him find his soulmate or whatever; except apparently they were supposed to be invisible to humans unless you met them in person first or something like that. "Because nobody's here."
"It's still early," he answered from his position ahead of me on the beach as he wandered off into the dunes near the waterline. "In fact...you brought your phone with you right?" He turned back towards me, face illuminated by its screen's light as he waited for my reply.
"Yeah, why?" I pulled my cell from my pocket and held it up so he could see it in return before tucking it back away again. It wasn't like I needed it anyway: it was just a dumb flip-phone that could barely handle calls anymore anyway so I usually avoided turning it on where I could avoid it; besides which, who would be calling me at this time of night? Nobody had called me since we started our little adventure.
Ben grinned as he glanced over his shoulder at me before continuing further away from the shoreline and down into the dunes beyond while he kept looking at his own phone in his hand instead: possibly checking map coordinates or something like that instead of paying attention to where we were going like he should have been doing instead of leaving everything up to me and my faulty memory of where we'd parked our car. "Just wait here a second." He waved his phone at me once more before disappearing into the darkness ahead of us with a loud crunching noise from beneath his feet as he left footprints deep into the sand.
Filled with a peculiar mix of excitement and apprehension, I wondered what would come next. Whether this strange excursion would lead us to the people Ben sought, or if we would simply spend an eerie evening wandering amongst sand dunes and venturing into a fantastical world built purely on our imaginations. But perhaps, in the end, this journey would become one of those cherished memories - unorthodox, captivating, and unforgettable. As I stood there, waiting for Ben’s return, I hoped that our trip to Brightwatch would indeed transform from an ordinary experience into something extraordinary - a story to reminisce about with great fervor. And maybe then we would find ourselves, guided by the stars above and the pull of fate, rediscovering the world anew, once again engulfed in the fascinating dance between reality and fantasy.
