# DINOSAUR WORLD
## Chapter 1: The Tiny Door
I found it behind the couch.
Not a sock. Not a toy car. Not even a stale cracker.
A door.
It was tiny. Like, mouse tiny. Like, it could fit in my pocket tiny. But it was there. A real wooden door with a little brass knob and everything.
I blinked. I rubbed my eyes. I blinked again.
Still there.
"Mommy!" I yelled. "There's a door!"
She was in the kitchen. I heard pots clanking. "That's nice, sweetie!"
"No, Mommy. A REAL door. A tiny one."
Pots kept clanking. She wasn't coming.
I looked at the door again. It was sitting right where the wall meets the floor. Right behind the big blue couch where I hide when I don't want to eat broccoli.
I put my finger on the knob. It was cold. Like ice cream cold.
I turned it.
The door swung open.
And the whole world got really, really bright.

## Chapter 2: Where Am I?
I was standing in grass.
But not normal grass. This grass was up to my nose. Green and tall and swishy. The sky was orange. Like a mango. Like the sunset but brighter.
Something growled.
I turned around.
A giant lizard was looking at me. It was as big as our car. Bigger maybe. It had horns on its head and teeth that could chew up my whole bed.
I screamed.
The lizard tilted its head. It blinked its big yellow eyes.
"Bloop?" it said.
I stopped screaming.
"Bloop?" I said back.
The lizard wiggled its tail. It made a sound like a happy puppy but ten times louder. It hopped toward me.
I wanted to run. But my legs were stuck. Like when you're in a dream and you can't move.
The lizard sniffed my hair. Its breath was warm like toast. Then it licked my face.
Lizard slime. Everywhere.
"Ewwww!" I wiped my cheek. "What is wrong with you?"
The lizard made the happy sound again. It jumped up and down. The ground shook.
That's when I noticed something. This lizard was a baby. A giant baby lizard. But still a baby.
I looked around. There were more of them. Big ones. Small ones. Ones with spikes. Ones with long necks. Ones flying in the sky.
Dinosaurs.
Real dinosaurs.
I was in dinosaur world.

## Chapter 3: The Triceratops Named Pickle
The baby lizard kept following me.
I named him Pickle because he was green and bumpy and kind of silly. He had three horns on his head. Mommy told me those are called triceratops. But I couldn't say that word so I just called him Pickle.
"Pickle," I said. "Where are your parents?"
Pickle tilted his head. He didn't know.
We walked through the tall grass. The orange sky was getting darker. Purple clouds floated by. They looked like cotton candy.
A big shadow passed over us.
I looked up.
A dinosaur with wings was flying above. Huge. Like a plane. Like two planes. It opened its mouth and made a sound that shook my bones.
Pickle hid behind me.
"That's okay," I whispered. "I'm scared too."
The flying dinosaur didn't see us. It flew away toward the mountains.
I let out my breath.
"Okay Pickle. We need to find your family."
Pickle made a sad noise.
"We'll find them," I said. "I promise."
I didn't know how to keep that promise. I was four years old. I didn't even know how to tie my shoes. But Pickle was looking at me with his big yellow eyes and I couldn't say no.
So we walked.

## Chapter 4: The Rumble
The ground started shaking.
Not like Pickle shaking. Bigger. Scarier.
The trees behind us were falling down. CRASH. CRASH. CRASH.
Something was coming.
Pickle made a scared sound. He pushed me with his nose toward a big rock.
"Hide?" I said.
He pushed me again.
We ran behind the rock. It was as big as our house. I peeked around the corner.
A dinosaur was walking through the forest. It was the biggest dinosaur I had ever seen. Its neck went up and up and up. Into the clouds. Its feet were as big as our car. As big as two cars. When it stepped, the ground went BOOM.
It was eating leaves from the top of a tree. It didn't even look at us.
"Pickle," I whispered. "That's a brachiosaurus. I saw it in my book."
Pickle didn't care about books. He was still shaking.
"Don't worry," I said. "It only eats plants. Like salad."
Pickle looked at me like "salad is gross."
"I know buddy. But it's not going to eat us."
The brachiosaurus finished its tree and walked away. The ground stopped shaking.
We came out from behind the rock.
"See?" I said. "Nothing to be scared of."
That's when I heard the roar.
Not a happy roar. An angry roar. A hungry roar.
Pickle and I looked at each other.
We ran.
---
## Chapter 5: The Big One
We ran through the grass. Through the trees. Over a little river.
The roar kept getting closer.
I tripped. I fell. My knee hurt.
Pickle stopped. He turned around. He stood in front of me.
"Pickle, no!" I yelled. "Run!"
But he wouldn't. He stood there. His little horns pointed forward. He was trying to protect me.
The dinosaur came out of the trees.
It was a T-Rex. I knew it from my book. It had tiny arms and huge teeth and mean little eyes.
It looked at Pickle. It looked at me.
It smiled.
I closed my eyes. I didn't want to see.
Then something weird happened.
The T-Rex stopped. It looked confused. It looked at the sky. It looked at the ground. It looked at me again.
Then it turned around and walked away.
Just like that.
I opened my eyes. "What... what happened?"
Pickle made a happy sound. He licked my face again.
"Stop that." But I was laughing.
I looked at the sky. The purple clouds were turning pink. The orange sky was getting dark.
"We need to find the door," I said. "We need to go home."
Pickle's ears drooped. He knew what I meant.
"I'll come back," I said. "I promise. But I need to tell Mommy where I am."
Pickle made a sad noise.
We started walking back the way we came. I hoped I could find the door. I hoped it was still there.
Because this dinosaur world was big and scary and amazing.
And I wasn't done exploring it yet.
