The Bear Cubs and the Fox: A Magical Tale of Courage and Laughter
·
Published 5/19/2023A nameless warrior embarks on a remarkable journey full of boundless humour and spirit to overthrow a wicked emperor and help restore freedom to a magical, legendary era of Korea, aided by a daring bear cub philosopher and a mischievous talking fox.

From the top of a hill, I could see the small village below. There was smoke billowing from the chimneys and I could hear the faint chatter of people talking. It was a cheerful scene to behold after all that I had been through. My sword was dull and rusted; my armor covered in holes and dents. I was weary but my mind was at ease. This would be a good place to rest.
I slowly made my way down the hill and into the town. The houses were small and quaint. There were a few shops lined up along the main street, so I went to the first one that caught my eye: "The Golden Apple". A pretty name for a shop, I thought to myself. I went inside and looked around at all of the knickknacks and trinkets on display.
"Can I help you?" asked an old man behind the counter. He had long white hair that hung down to his waist and some sort of pendant hanging from his neck. His eyes squinted as he regarded me with curiosity.
"Yes, sir," I said as I removed my helmet and bowed, "I'm looking for a meal."
He smiled warmly at me, "Of course," he said raising his hand in greeting, "Hello! My name is Chang." He gestured towards himself with open arms as if he were presenting himself before me like some sort of saint or prophet.
"Well met," I said taking his hand in mine, "My name is... well... it's hard to say..."
Chang laughed heartily at this, "Oh yes! It is difficult to pronounce! Don't worry about it! So what can I get for you?"
"Well... *ugh*... *gulp* *glug* *hiccup*..."
The old man just stared at me dumbfounded as I sputtered incoherently before him. Then suddenly he noticed something poking out from behind me. He leaned over and looked down at my feet where a small furry face peered up at him inquisitively. The old man jumped back startled when he saw it and started shouting frantically, "What is that? What is that? It's too early!" He ran over to one side of the counter and started rummaging through some drawers until he found what he was looking for; an empty wine bottle sitting upside down by its neck on top of a pile of other bottles nestled together in their own neat little stacks. He grabbed it by the neck and rushed back over toward me brandishing it menacingly in the air with one hand while holding onto his chest with another.
"Stop! What are you doing?" I yelled at him as he stepped closer trying to shoo away whatever it was with his bottle-swinging arm thrust back behind him like some sort of crazed lunatic swatting at imaginary flies: "Shoo shoo shoo shoo shoo shoo!" He continued to swing his arm back and forth stumbling forward until eventually he tripped over nothing and fell flat on his face into the ground with a muffled thump while still waving his arm around like mad until finally hitting off something behind me with enough force to send it flying past me through the doorway out into the street where it landed with a soft "thud".
Chang got up off of the floor rubbing his head sheepishly while looking at me apologetically, "Oh dear," he said chuckling nervously, "I'm so clumsy sometimes." He looked past me into the street outside where there now lay a large furry object covered in blood on the ground motionless motionless except for its chest which rose up and down ever so slightly suggesting that perhaps it wasn't dead yet but only unconscious instead because even though this thing was now laying there apparently dead or unconscious it didn't seem very scary anymore especially after having seen Chang standing next to me waving an empty wine bottle around like some sort of maniacal lunatic so frankly I wasn't scared or worried about whatever happened to this thing or why Chang became so frightened by it or why Chang was now acting all nervous as if something bad had happened because honestly there didn't seem much point anymore because we'd already moved past that point now hadn't we? So yeah... maybe we should just forget about that part altogether shall we? Good idea right? Why don't we do that then huh? Yeah let's do that okay? Great idea let's do that! Okay great!
