"Get out of the way! Move!" Lewis shouted from the driver's seat as he weaved the ambulance through traffic, sirens blaring. His heart raced as he focused on the road ahead.
"I can't believe this is happening," Emily said, gripping onto the side of her seat. "We're actually saving lives."
Lewis glanced over at her for a moment, a smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah, it's something, isn't it?"
They had been working together on the ambulance for just over a month now and Lewis couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction every time they saved someone. It was a far cry from his previous life as an F1 driver but in some ways, it felt even more rewarding.
As they pulled up outside the hospital, Lewis quickly jumped out and opened the back doors. The paramedics rushed to unload their patient, a young woman who was struggling to breathe.
"Okay, let's get her inside," Lewis said, helping to lift her onto a stretcher.
They rushed through the hospital doors and down the corridor towards the emergency room. Doctors and nurses swarmed around them as they transferred the patient onto a bed.
"Good work," one of the doctors said as they began treating her. "You guys got here just in time."
Lewis smiled at Emily before stepping back to give them space. He watched as they worked together to save another life and couldn't help but feel a surge of pride.
Once everything had calmed down, Lewis and Emily made their way back to the ambulance. As they climbed inside, Emily turned to him with a grin.
"You know," she said, "you're not so bad at this whole ambulance thing."
Lewis chuckled and shrugged. "I guess I've had some practice driving fast."
Emily laughed and shook her head. "No, I mean it. You're really good at staying calm under pressure. And the way you handle the patients, it's like you've been doing this for years."
Lewis's smile faded slightly as he looked down at his hands. "Well, I've seen my fair share of accidents and injuries in my time."
Emily reached out and gently touched his arm. "I know it must be hard for you, after everything that happened. But you're making a difference now, Lewis. You're saving lives."
He looked up at her, gratitude shining in his eyes.
"Thank you," he said softly.
Over the next few weeks, Lewis and Emily continued to work together on the ambulance. They grew closer with each passing day, sharing stories and laughter in between calls.
One evening, as they sat together in the back of the ambulance during a quiet moment, Emily turned to Lewis with a serious expression.
"I need to ask you something," she said quietly.
Lewis raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"
She took a deep breath and looked down at her hands before meeting his gaze.
"Do you ever think about what happened? The accident that... that took away your career?"
Lewis's face paled slightly as memories flooded back to him. The screech of tires, the sickening thud of impact, the sound of sirens blaring...
"Every day," he admitted quietly. "I see her face every time I close my eyes."
Emily reached out and took his hand in hers, offering him comfort and support.
"But you're not that person anymore," she said firmly. "You made a mistake, we all do. But now you're using your skills to save lives instead of taking them."
Tears welled up in Lewis's eyes as he looked at her, overwhelmed by her kindness and understanding.
"I don't deserve you," he whispered.
Emily squeezed his hand gently and smiled.
"Maybe not," she said softly. "But I'm glad you're here."
They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of their words hanging in the air. Then Emily cleared her throat and stood up.
"Come on," she said, a mischievous glint in her eye. "I think it's time for some ice cream."
Lewis chuckled and shook his head, grateful for her ability to lighten the mood.
"Yeah," he said. "I think I could go for some ice cream."
As they made their way to the nearest café, Lewis couldn't help but feel a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, he was starting to find his place in the world again.
