"I don't see why I need your help." Banyupa spat the words through gritted teeth. The two were surrounded by a crowd of onlookers, who had gathered to witness their punishment for their crimes.

A small wooden platform had been set up, and on it stood Kai, bound at the wrists and ankles, his expression resolute despite his obvious exhaustion. At his side, the priest carried a long scourge in one hand and a heavy hammer in the other. He was dressed in full ceremonial regalia, the bright red and yellow fabric of his flamboyant vestments contrasting sharply with his dark skin and iron-grey hair.

"You know why you're here." He replied coldly. "You know what we are guilty of."

The large crowd began chanting: "Red!"

Kai looked to Banyupa, who was glaring at him as if he wanted to claw out his eyes.

"And then there's that one." A voice cried out from somewhere in the throng. "He's guilty too!" It was followed by laughter, which only served to enrage Banyupa further.

"You know why you're here." The priest repeated sternly, raising the scourge above his head. "Stand forward and receive your judgment." He tightened his grip on the weapon until his knuckles turned white.

Banyupa took a step forward, standing next to Kai on the stage. His jaw clenched tightly shut as he stared directly ahead.

The priest faced him for a moment before raising the whip above both of their heads, shouting "For the King!" Then he struck them each once across the back and chest with all of his strength, eliciting cries of pain from both men as they were sent sprawling to the ground.

After regaining his feet and wiping away some of the blood that had trickled down from a gash on his brow, Banyupa moved closer to Kai until their shoulders were touching again. They stood close together for several minutes until finally the priest approached with his hammer raised high over Kai's head.

"Do you have anything to say?" He asked quietly, looking down at them with an expression of pity and disgust. Banyupa shook his head quickly in response before spitting at him as hard as he could manage. The spittle landed squarely between Kai's shoulder blades with a wet splat that made those nearby wince in disgust; there was no way he would survive this ordeal now if this human tried to intervene any further. It was clear that Banyupa was absolutely determined not to let that happen.

The priest's eyes narrowed at Banyupa's defiant act. A hush fell over the crowd as they watched in anticipation, waiting to see what the priest would do in response. Slowly, the old man wiped the spittle off his vestments with a dignified grace, his face betraying no emotion.

"I see how it is," the priest said, his voice laced with chilling serenity. "Very well then." He turned his attention to Kai, his grip on the heavy hammer tightening. "For the King," he muttered under his breath.

Just as he was about to bring the hammer down upon Kai, a piercing cry echoed through the air. The crowd turned to see a young woman pushing her way through the throng, her delicate frame heaving with exertion. She wore a tattered cloak that barely concealed her wild, fiery hair.

"Stop!" she shouted, her voice filled with desperation. "Please, you can't do this!"

The priest paused mid-swing, his eyes narrowing as he took in the sight of the woman. "And who might you be, young lady? This is not a place for intervention."

Ignoring the warning, the woman rushed forward, her eyes fixed on Banyupa. "I am Liana, a healer and a friend of these men," she pleaded, her voice filled with urgency. "You can't execute them. They're innocent!"

The crowd murmured with curiosity and doubt. All eyes turned to the priest, waiting for his decision. He glanced between Liana, Banyupa, and Kai, his grip on the hammer slackening slightly.

"What evidence do you have to support your claims?" the priest asked, his voice betraying a hint of doubt.

"I've been investigating the crimes they were accused of," Liana explained breathlessly. "They were framed, set up by the true culprits. I have proof!" She reached into her cloak and pulled out a small, weathered journal. "This contains the true accounts, the real evidence."

The priest took the journal cautiously, his eyes growing wider as he scanned its contents. The crowd murmured in anticipation, their skepticism slowly turning into intrigue.

After what felt like an eternity, the priest handed the journal back to Liana. "If what you say is true," he began, his voice holding a new weight, "then those responsible for the crimes must be brought to justice."

"Yes!" Liana exclaimed, a glimmer of hope brightening her eyes. "But we need your help, your influence to ensure a fair trial."

The priest nodded, his face marked with determination. "I will do what I can," he declared. The crowd erupted in cheers, a wave of relief and excitement sweeping through them.

Kai and Banyupa looked at each other, their faces etched with disbelief. They had been moments away from certain death, and now, thanks to Liana's intervention, they had a fighting chance.

As the crowd dispersed, the priest stepped down from the platform, joining Liana, Kai, and Banyupa. "We must act swiftly," he said, his voice carrying a sense of urgency. "Gather your allies. We will bring the true culprits to justice and restore honor to these men."

With renewed hope filling their hearts, the unlikely group left the scene, stepping into the shadows to prepare for the battles that lay ahead. They would face danger, treachery, and hardships, but together, they would uncover the truth and fight for justice.
