Unicorn Noir: The Dark and Deadly Case of Detective Alice Reed.

Published 5/8/2024
The night was dark and misty as Detective Alice Reed trudged through the grimy streets of Noirhaven. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a sickly pallor over the city, as if it too had been tainted by the corruption that seeped from every crack and crevice.
Alice pulled her coat tighter around her body, trying to ward off both the chill in the air and the sense of foreboding that hung over Noirhaven like a shroud. She had seen her fair share of crime and depravity during her time on the force, but there was something different about this city. Something otherworldly.
She rounded a corner and came face-to-face with a group of unicorns, their glowing horns illuminating the darkness. In most parts of the world, unicorns were revered creatures, symbols of purity and grace. But here in Noirhaven, they were just another weapon in the arsenal of ruthless gangs who ruled with an iron hoof.
The leader of the unicorn gang stepped forward, his horn pulsing with an eerie light. "What's a dame like you doing out here all alone?" he sneered.
Alice reached for her gun, but before she could draw it, another figure emerged from the shadows. He was tall and brooding, with a shock of white hair that matched his unicorn's mane.
"I believe she's under my protection," he said in a deep voice that sent shivers down Alice's spine.
The gang leader snorted in derision. "Who do you think you are? Some kinda unicorn knight?"
The man cracked his knuckles and smiled, revealing sharp fangs. "You can call me Vincent," he said. "And yes, I suppose you could say I'm a knight."
Without warning, Vincent lunged at the gang leader, his unicorn following close behind. The other unicorns joined in the fray, their horns slashing through the air like deadly blades.
Alice stood frozen for a moment, then shook herself out of her daze. She unholstered her gun and fired a warning shot into the air.
"Break it up, everyone!" she yelled. "I'm a cop."
The fighting ceased and the unicorns melted back into the shadows, disappearing as quickly as they had appeared. Vincent turned to Alice and raised an eyebrow.
"A cop, huh?" he said with a smirk. "You don't look like any cop I've ever seen."
Alice scowled and tucked her gun back into its holster. "Well, appearances can be deceiving," she said. "What's your deal, anyway? Why were those unicorns after me?"
Vincent leaned against the wall and ran a hand through his hair. "You're getting too close to something," he said cryptically. "Something big."
Alice crossed her arms over her chest. "And what would that be? Enlighten me, oh mysterious unicorn knight."
Vincent looked at her for a long moment, his gaze intense. Then he sighed and shook his head.
"I can't tell you everything," he said. "But I can give you a piece of advice: watch your back, Detective Reed. There are darker forces at play here than you can possibly imagine."
And with that, he disappeared into the night, his unicorn following silently behind him.
Alice stared after them for a moment, then shook her head in disbelief. "Unbelievable," she muttered under her breath.
She turned on her heel and continued down the deserted street, determined to solve the mystery that had brought mythical creatures and gang warfare together in this dark and gritty city known as Noirhaven.
