“Traveler, I’ve found it!”
Jex looked up from the steering console. “The Planet of Origins?”
The Traveler nodded. “We’re almost there. I think we’re approaching the outer orbital zone now. We can take a look.”
Jex made a few adjustments in the panel, and the viewscreen flickered to life. The planet filled most of the screen, dark blue with white clouds. It was about twice as big as Earth. But it was not Earth. Its continents were strange and unfamiliar, dotted with long chains of volcanoes that belched thick black smoke into the atmosphere. Jagged gorges cut across the surface, with rivers of lava flowing down from the mountains into the oceans, turning them a deep red color that never changed. The huge oceans themselves were an even deeper shade of red than their shores, so dark it seemed to absorb all light that fell on its surface. At the center of each ocean sat a small volcanic island, similar to those around them but smaller and more geometrically perfect, with regular shapes and angles.
“What do you think?” said Jex, turning to look at his companion. “Does this planet look familiar to you?”
The Traveler looked back at him with her piercing blue eyes and smiled a wide smile that revealed two rows of perfectly straight teeth. “It looks beautiful! Do you think it’s habitable?”
Jex sighed and shook his head slightly. “No idea… The atmosphere is breathable, but probably poisonous for us… And it doesn’t look like there could be any intelligent life on that world… But if we want to find out what happened to our ancestors, this is where we must go! Our journey will end here!” He tapped the steering console one last time, then turned back to face his companion. “Are you ready for this final journey? Are you ready for our mission on Origin to conclude? Are you ready to settle our people back on Earth?” He smiled warmly at her as he finished speaking; the Traveler flashed her gleaming smile again in response.
They stared at each other for a moment in silence before Jex turned back towards the viewscreen and began pressing buttons on a control panel near it.*
