The Ghost of Chapel Road
·
Published 2/16/2023On a daring journey through the dark and horror-filled Chapel Road, an ambitious and mischievous camper braves a mysterious and unexpected cemetery to confront the shadowy phantom of Camp Moose Pine's most notorious former camper. Will he even survive his Stephen King-inspired quest for answers?
The camp’s main building was a one-story, rectangular building that overlooked a large field. The flooring was made of wood and the walls were covered in posters of rock bands and actors from the 80s. Scattered throughout the room were several wooden desks with the name of each person that belonged to certain cabins circled in black sharpie. There was also a small kitchen area where food could be warmed up if it wasn’t already cooked on site. In the far corner was a door leading to a humid room that held lockers for personal belongings, but also had a few couches scattered around. On the opposite side of the room there was another door leading to a bathroom with stalls and lockers.
I’m sitting in one of the corners of the main building with my friend, John, as we discuss our plans for that night. It was almost 9pm and we had just finished dinner which consisted of chicken nuggets and mac n cheese.
“So what are you guys planning?” said an unfamiliar voice from behind us. I turn around to see two girls standing there with their arms crossed, one with curly hair and brown eyes, dressed in blue jeans and a camo tank top, while the other had straight black hair and green eyes. She wore jean shorts and a white tank top with a black sweatshirt on top.
“We’re going down Chapel Road tonight,” said John without hesitation, “There’s supposed to be this ghost who rides a horse back and forth that everyone always talks about but no one has ever seen, so we want to go take a look for ourselves.”
I shook my head as she replied, “You do know that you aren’t allowed to leave this property right? Not unless you have permission from counselors or one of them is with you at least.”
John shrugged his shoulders and continued, “We know, we just thought we would sneak out because why not? If they find out they can send us home early anyways!”
The girl in blue jeans decided she had enough and stormed away while her friend followed behind her. I couldn’t blame them for being upset; I didn't want to get kicked out either so I decided to go along with John's idea as well instead of heading back to my cabin until tomorrow morning like originally planned when dinner ended at 7pm. After all, what fun is it staying at camp if you can't break any rules?
The sun set over an hour ago now which means people should start exiting their cabins soon as they begin getting ready for bedtime rituals such as brushing teeth or showering before sleep begins. The sky turned dark purple after sunset as stars began to show themselves against the backdrop of space. The air smelled crisp as summer began its goodbye for the year now that autumn was just beginning; it was nice fresh scent before summer's end approaches. As we walk past different buildings on our way to Chapel Road I can hear people talking from inside their rooms or others were leaving their cabins outside as well to use bathrooms or get some fresh air before bedtime as well. My feet crunched softly against the gravel underneath me with every step I took towards Chapel Road which was about twenty minutes away from camp by foot which is longer than expected given how close everyone says it is here on site but oh well...at least it's not too late yet! A few times we both stopped walking and stared up at the sky watching fireflies fly through midair before disappearing behind trees in front of us that lined roads near camp. We talked more about what we would do once we left camp such as who would live where when we got older such as me moving to Alaska while he went to Tennessee which seemed like more than enough time spent together considering we haven't seen each other since elementary school until last week when our parents told us they had arranged for us to stay here at camp together over summer break while they went on vacation together overseas since they never got married or anything even though they've been dating for ten years now! You'd think they would tell us something like that sooner or something! One time John stopped talking mid sentence when he noticed someone walking towards us from nearby trees along side us; he whispered into my ear telling me he saw someone headed our way so we both hid behind some nearby bushes until whoever this person walking towards us passed by without noticing us peeking through leaves! He looked kind of pale even though most people here are tanned from spending time outside all day long during warm weather seasons but still...this person looked really pale like almost sickly pale like he didn't get much sleep last night or something! The guy walked by so fast it startled both John and I so after waiting another minute or two after he passed by we continued on our journey towards Chapel Road!
At some point during our journey down Chapel Road our conversation died down; nothing but crickets chirping could be heard in our surroundings besides our footsteps crunching against gravel underneath me again with every step taken forward towards whatever lay ahead down this road I believe will lead us closer towards seeing whatever mysterious thing everyone keeps telling me about this place supposedly being haunted by! At times small animals scampered across the road in front of us making both John and I jump but nothing else happened until finally after what felt like forever walking down this road suddenly there appeared in front of us an old chapel made completely out of stone except there were no windows except one stained glass window above a door facing directly towards both John and myself filled entirely with red colored glass which made everything turned crimson color once light shone through it! It was creepy looking but beautiful nonetheless especially since it was surrounded by tall trees growing taller than anyone could imagine surrounding the entire chapel giving it an ominous feeling if you ask me! Then suddenly out of nowhere we both heard loud creaking sounds coming from within those woods lining both sides of this road making my heart skip beats faster than normal due [to] fear which made both John and I jump into defense mode ready for whatever popped out from within those woods around us! But nothing happened afterwards besides silence which made both John and myself sigh heavily as we relaxed showing how scared we were just moments ago! But then suddenly from within those woods on either side appeared three figures wearing long cloaks covering their entire body except for their face; making them look kinda menacing staring at both John and myself intently through hidden eyes hidden beneath hooded cloaks slightly swaying back and forth within those woods lining either side of this road making me absolutely terrified beyond belief wondering what these people wanted!? But then suddenly they simply vanished into thin air disappearing instantly only leaving behind a gusty breeze blowing past my hairline making me shiver despite wearing multiple layers due [to] cold temperatures outside tonight! What did these strangers want? Why did they appear then disappear so quickly? And why did they wear cloaks covering most parts if their bodies?! And most importantly why did they vanish into thin air?! What lies ahead now...? What awaits further down this road...? What could possibly happen next...? Will I ever return back here once whatever supernatural event occurs...? Or will I never return...ever...?
