A Tumultuous Pursuit of Love

Hugo stood in the dark, looking at the house from behind a tree. It was an older house, that one, made of old stone. He could almost feel the walls pressing in on him. He imagined the spirits that haunted it and shuddered at the thought of being caught inside those walls at night. So many people had disappeared in there, and so many more had lost their minds.

He tugged his hood further down to cover his face and started forward. Hugo was not a brave man by any means; he was actually quite cowardly, but he still had to do it. He couldn't live in this town much longer if he didn't get some money soon; he needed to leave as soon as possible. And there was only one way for him to make any money quickly: steal from Katherine's father.

Hugo sighed as he grew closer. The plan was simple, really: he would sneak into her father's study, find whatever valuables were in there, and take them before running off into the night. It wasn't like he could be caught by anyone- no one would miss him once he left town, after all- and it wasn't like he had anything to lose if he failed. Of course, getting caught would mean that Katherine would probably never speak to him again after she found out... but it wasn't like she'd speak to him now anyway, even though they went to school together.

Hugo stopped when he reached the door leading into the manor and looked around nervously before trying the handle. Of course it was locked- who would keep their doors unlocked? He fumbled in his pockets for a moment before pulling out a lockpick and setting to work on the lock with careful movements. It took him several seconds to open it, but eventually he did so and pushed the door open carefully before slipping inside and shutting it behind him before anyone noticed.

Hugo stood still for another moment with his back against the wall, listening for any noises that might give away his presence in the house. Once he was sure no one was about, he pulled his hood down again, revealing a young man with brown hair and dark eyes covered by thick glasses. He moved towards the nearest door and opened it cautiously before stepping through and moving towards a staircase leading up towards where Katherine's room should be. Hugo knew exactly where her room was because Katherine never shut her curtains when she slept; she liked sleeping with them open so she could see the sun rise through them in the morning.

Hugo smiled faintly at that thought as he reached her bedroom door and tried it gently before sighing when it didn't budge an inch. Of course it wouldn't- Katherine's bedroom was always locked tight, which meant that Hugo couldn't just pick the lock like last time when he snuck into her room to talk with her during lunchtime at school without anyone noticing. She told him that her parents were very strict about her staying in her room during dinner time so they could have time alone together after putting Katherine to bed earlier in the evening, but Hugo thought they might suspect something if they saw him sneaking past their door every day while they ate dinner together... so this time around Hugo decided to just break into her father's study downstairs instead and steal something valuable which she could sell or use as collateral to convince her parents that she wanted to do something outside of their rules... hopefully getting them to let her go on a trip with Hugo somewhere far away where they wouldn't catch them together until they were married...

With this thought in mind, Hugo set about trying various doors until he found one that opened easily into what looked like Katherine's father's study; apparently this room wasn't locked at all because no one ever bothered using it anyway since no one else lived here besides Katherine's parents anymore... except for Hugo who needed a place to sleep once this job was done tonight so that nobody suspected him later on about having been here tonight... which meant that breaking into it first might actually turn out to be useful after all!

Hugo moved through the kitchen quickly as if expecting someone from Katherine's family to pop up at any moment along with some servants or something with pitchforks demanding answers from him until he reached what looked like a study of some sort filled entirely with books of various sorts sitting neatly on shelves lining either side of each wall along with strange looking jars lining another part of said walls filled with things like insects preserved in formaldehyde or cut up parts of animals stuffed inside clear tubes full of liquid or powdery substances sitting in piles on top of wooden racks lined up next to other shelves filled with things like maps or newspapers...

Hugo ignored all of these things as well as most of what looked like papers strewn across tables spread throughout the room while making himself busy rummaging through cabinets set along another part of each wall filled with various items from small trinkets dating back centuries ago worth enough money for a few meals if sold off quietly without causing too much attention that way or large pieces of jewelry worth thousands upon thousands of pounds each depending on how rare or special they were...

After several more minutes spent searching through everything left untouched by everyone else living here recently until finally finding something hidden beneath paperwork on top of one table covered by a large map showing an island far away from anywhere else that might be worth stealing along with its contents...
