Lan Li's Epic Quest
·
Published 4/6/2023An intrepid teen, Lan Li, braves supernatural forces and human foes as she embarks on a quest to protect a tiny world she uncovers in an ancient forest, setting off on an epic journey which will ultimately determine the fate of the small and prove her courageous legacy.
Lian Li had spent the better part of an hour seemingly lost in the middle of a forest. What was supposed to be a quick trip to the river for some water, had turned into an adventure as she wound her way through what felt like endless trees. The crimson leaves that dotted the branches above her head were the only indication that autumn was here, and not spring. She would have been worried about getting lost, if it weren’t for the fact that she could still hear and smell the river, which meant she wasn’t that far from her village. But then again, this forest was known for strange things, and people who got lost here often never came back.
Suddenly, a gentle breeze whipped up from behind her, causing Lian Li to whirl around on her heels. A faint buzzing reverberated around her ears, but when she looked down she saw nothing there. Her eyes followed the wind as it wrapped its cool fingers around her feet and ankles. At first she thought nothing of it, until with a sudden tug it yanked at her feet and pulled her off balance onto the ground with a thump.
She struggled against whatever had caught hold of her foot, only to find that each time she pushed or pulled away, it only seemed to pull harder in return. The more she fought against it, the more she struggled against it, until suddenly something began to dig its way into her hands just below where they were pressed against the ground. It didn’t hurt, but as soon as Lian Li realized what was happening, her hands shot away from each other like two startled birds.
It took Lian Li a moment to realize what was happening. She stared at the ground between her hands dumbly for a few seconds before looking at the lines that now cut through the dirt in front of her in shock. A smile crept its way across her face as she bent forward again and started drawing shapes through the dirt with one hand while holding down the other with all her strength once more.
She couldn’t help but giggle as she felt herself being pulled across the ground by some unseen force once more; this time however she kept both hands firmly pinned beneath hers as if they were being held against them by someone else’s hands as well. Soon enough though they broke free again and raced upwards to make another shape just beside them; then another one after that; until finally they both met somewhere in between and formed a triangle with three sides:
Lian Li squealed with joy as she sat up and spread out both arms wide, creating yet another pattern on the ground before her:
The little girl laughed heartily as she stood up and began walking around with one foot dragging behind her along the dirt road, leaving an interesting trail behind her. Lian Li continued this game for quite some time before finally giving up because it was getting dark and making shapes in front of yourself wasn’t nearly as fun when you couldn’t see them anymore. And so like any other little kid would do when they get bored of playing by themselves, Lian Li picked up several rocks from off the side of path and began throwing them at trees instead while making loud *thwacks* every time one connected with something solid enough to make noise (which wasn’t very often).
Just then, something hit Lian Li right in between her shoulder blades hard enough to send her flying forward several feet before landing on all fours at the edge of another path at least ten feet ahead of where she was standing before:
And when Lian Li looked down at where she had been standing just moments ago, she discovered a tiny bottle lying there, reminiscent of the stories her mother used to tell her. She marveled at how quickly all those rocks she had thrown had been collected into a neat pile next to the bottle. Reaching for it seemed nearly impossible, as if an unseen force was pulling her hands away every time she tried.
Frustration and fear bubbled within her as she realized that she was indeed being taken away from her village. But despite these feelings, Lian Li found a sense of determination growing within her. She thought back to her mother's stories and wondered if this could be some sort of test. Maybe it wasn't about proving herself brave or strong or finding friends; perhaps it was about finding the courage to face adversity, right here and now.
Lian Li knew that only she could decide her course of action. She chose not to be overwhelmed by fear or regret but instead embraced the courage deep within her soul. As she reached for the mysterious bottle one more time, she reminded herself that sometimes, the greatest strength is finding the resilience to face the challenges that life throws at us, even when everyone says we'll never be strong enough.
