The old man in the bed stirred, his eyes fluttering and then opening. He looked around the room, seeing a woman seated at the desk, staring intently at papers scattered across its top. She seemed to be writing on them, her pen gliding smoothly over the paper as she wrote.
"Sophia?" he asked softly, not wanting to startle her.
She looked up at him, smiling warmly. "Yes, Dad? Is there something you need?"
"It's been so long." His voice was soft and quiet, even strained by illness. He had been sick for so long that neither of them could remember when he had been well enough to chatter away with her.
"I know." Sophia replied softly. "I'm here now."
He reached out his hand to her and she took it, squeezing gently. She sat down on the edge of the bed next to him and took his other hand in hers as well. They sat like that for some time, her reading again while holding his hands. Her father seemed calmer after a while and she looked up to see if he was sleeping again but found he was looking at her, a smile playing around his mouth corners.
"I love you so much." He said quietly. "I'm sorry I haven't always been able to show you how much."
"Oh Dad." Tears swam in Sophia's eyes as she leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek. "You've always showed me how much you love me."
He gazed into her eyes, a look of wonder on his face before he closed his eyes again and drifted off to sleep once more. Sophia watched him for a few moments before returning to her work at the desk, still holding his hands lightly in hers. She seldom left him these days, spending every waking moment with or near him as she tried frantically to catch up with all that had happened in the world outside this room while she had been here nursing him through his sickness.
